Your All Time Baseball Lineup

Inspired from @Jon 's wild claim at just how overrated Barry Bonds is (I dont think he's the GOAT due to roids but he was great before roids). THis will be slightly Yankee heavy as I do love them damn dirty Yankees

  1. LF Ricky Henderson - GOAT lead off hitter, sure Ichiro might have been a better pure hitter, but Ricky beats him in OBP and then is a terror on the basses
  2. SS Derek Jeter - Is prime (before Roids) A-Rod better? Yes. Jeter gets some flak for his defense, but it was serviceable. I picked him because he is clutch and a leader
  3. RF Babe Ruth - The GOAT, even has a candy bar named after him
  4. 1B Lou Gehrig - Are there others you could argue? Maybe, but he was a hitting machine that was an RBI powerhouse, and that was even after Ruth came in and cleared the bases many time
  5. CF Mickey Mantle - I think he's one of the best pure athletes in the sport ever. Did Mays have a better/ longer career? Yes, but Mickey's peak was as good as any. Stupid fucking injuries and drainage ditch that caused him to fuck his knee up
  6. 3B Mike Schmidt - There are a lot of picks here that I could have probably gone with, but he felt right, in terms of power and defensive presence
  7. C Thurman Munson - I debated between Berra, Bench and Munson. I ended up going with Munson for being a fantastic captain whose peak was as good as any catcher, just had his career cut short. Plus his stache was legendary
  8. 2B Jackie Robinson - Slighly underrated due to his importance to the game
  9. P Pedro Martinez - This was a tough pick, but his 2000 season is legendary and in peak steroid era. I hate that he was Red Sox for part of his career, but he's the only I actually like
Relief - Mariano Rivera, if there is any one else, you're just bias against your Yankee hate

If we are doing DH, move Ruth to DH and put Willie Mays in at RF.

C: Yogi Berra - Higher career batting average than bench, more RBIthan my second choice, Johnny Bench. Two stats I feel are largely undervalued with all the sabermetrics out there.
Honorable mention: Johnny Bench

1B: Lou Gehrig - how can you argue with a .340 batting average and .632 slugging. He’s also a smart base runner with 100+ career steals
Honorable mention: Jimmie Foxx

2B: Roger’s Hornsby - I don’t think this needs explanation. He leads most stats for hall of fame second baseman
Honorable mention: Rod Carew

SS: Honus Wagner. I don’t think it’s much of a competition
Honorable mention: Ernie Banks. Jeter was super consistent for his career but wasn’t ever the best. He would be a strong choice as a franchise player but not for one season

3B: Paul Molitor - great SB numbers, .300+ career batting average.
Honorable mention: Mike Schmidt

RF: Roberto Clemente - I’ve always loved him as a player, but I feel like I could switch to any of my honorable mentions and it would still be good
Honorable mentions: this was probably the hardest position to choose from. Babe, Ichiro, Gwynn, Hank

CF: Willie Mays - I think he is the most well rounded baseball player ever. Also the best defensive center fielder ever
Honorable mention: Ty Cobb

LF: Ted Williams - self explanatory
Honorable mention: Stan Musial

SP: Tom Seaver
Honorable mention: Pedro

Closer: Mariano
Honorable mentions: Mariano again

i barely watch baseball and most of my opinions on it are informed by jon bois videos so this will be fun

P: gimme a rotation of the big unit himself Randy Johnson, the underrated legend Dave Stieb, the inimitable Bob Gibson, and let's round it out with King Felix and Big Sexy.

C: this is already a fun challenge because there are only so many catchers i can think of off the top of my head. i will go with owner of the best batting average in major league history Josh Gibson

1B: not going to go against the grain here. Lou Gehrig

2B: Jackie Robinson. i have had to look up positions for most of these guys so far

3B: Brooks Robinson. as you can see i'm also prioritizing players with the same last name for some reason

SS: Honus Wagner. that expensive card has got to mean something right

LF: Rickey Henderson. RIP

CF: Ken Griffey Jr. easy

RF: Ichiro. also easy

DH: Edgar Martinez. it's crazy how the mariners have never won a pennant

my favorite bit about that episode is that jose canseco is the only one who took issue with how he was going to be portrayed. he was supposed to wake up next to krabappel and miss the game but him and his wife (at the time) made them rewrite it so he was running into a burning house and being super heroic. additionally:

He disliked his caricature, saying "the animation looked nothing like [him]"[10] but said he found the acting was very easy.[13] When asked in 2007 about his part by the San Jose Mercury News he responded, "that was 100 years ago," hung up the phone and did not answer any of the paper's subsequent calls.[10]

I would like @A Baby Maker to provide his lineup at some point

Also @Cole cause he's my list buddy
oh man... all time baseball team is rough... but if were doing the team that *i* would wanna field.

SP: Pedro, and i won't be taking questions at this ttime.
CP: Rivera: fine. I dont like it though.
C: Jason Varitek: I dont care if he never hits, i don't care if he cant throw. i want him calling my games behind the plate.
1B: Miguel Cabrera: i think one of the best pure hitters of our generation.
2B: Chase Utley: Utley is always what i considered the "stereotype" ball player.
3B: David Wright: one of the sweetest swings in baseball.
SS: Hanley Ramirez: if were taking prime players, Hanley was my man.
LF: THE GREATEST HITTER WHO EVER LIVED. TED. WILLIAMS.
CF: Ken Griffey Jr: the greatest all around baseball player to ever play (says me, also not counting Mr Ohtani, he doesnt count)
RF: Mookie Betts: cant say enough, j want him back.
DH: David Ortiz: so I dont ever need to worry about the 9th inning.

I dont think these are the best 9 at any position or anything, but its who j would be willing to go to war with.

Brief moment after looking up pet/kid friendly carpet options...

SP: Pedro - after growing up here and having him be the man during my formative years, no chance of anyone else
RP: Mariano Rivera - same story as Pedro but with sadness

LF: Ted Williams - a Sox fan has no choice. He's also just that good
CF: Willie Mays - should be self explanatory
RF: Ichiro - I wish he spent more of his career in the US to see how he would have stacked up with a full career here
3B: Wade Boggs - also great at drinking beer, inspired an episode of Always Sunny
SS: Ernie Banks - I really wanted prime Nomar here for the feels...but I'll take Banks
2B: Rod Carew - he moved to first base at some point, but played second for long enough I feel, also featured in the Chanukah song
1B: Lou Gehrig - yeah...I'll agree with others here. The man also gave a good speech
C: Carlton Fisk - I had too many Yankees players already to take another here. He can wave the ball fair all day on my team
DH: David Ortiz without a doubt
