it's more of a case of convergent evolution over divergent evolution. the little blurb on the furry fandom wiki page about history goes into some detail about various origin points, primarily in the 70s and 80s although there are some works of media that date to the 60s that can be cited as furry influence. i think the disney robin hood movie was patient zero for a lot of people (for myself it was balto and the mid-90s saturday morning classic Road Rovers but that's neither here nor there) (not to mention looney tunes which imo aligns with furry design sensibilities more than disney stuff does)

also worth mentioning that furry stuff isn't exclusively kink/fetish related. for some people it for sure is but others just like the designs or the camaraderie or just having a funny little animal guy who represents you
