... does this game have any resemblance of pacing at all in the beginning? I've been to what, 6 major places/areas already, had two separate catastrophes happen, travel a thousand years, had advanced tutorial before basic ones, and more. Like... Wha. Game please.

Tidus is more annoying than I thought he would be from all the clips and everything I've seen. Wakka is great. Lulu is obviously a crowd favorite. Summoner lady is so forgetful she'd give Kairi a run for her money.

I think this is like the first 2-3 hours of the game? I just left whatever the first island village place was. I can't trust my in-game timer as I had left the game paused on the side as I was doing other things while trying to find more interest to continue. Man.

I'll probably come back over here to complain more as I boot the game back up. Hopefully sometime during now and before work starts again on the 2nd.

You will NOT like Tidus anymore than you already do. That’s a promise. However, aside from what you’ve outlined… the game does seem to pace better after you progress a little further.

Not necessarily. After Zanarkand I liked him a lot more.

FFX opens up a bit to me once you hit Mushroom Rock Road.

It is hands down my favorite FF game of all time with on 7 being close. And I love 6, 8 and 9 too.

Wonderful. Sigh. Maybe I'll just keep him benched for most of the game and only deal with him in cutscenes. Thought that's where he is annoying mostly. Oh well.

So far X isn't winning any prizes from me for sure. Sphere Grid... I'll hold off on judgement for later. Maybe it'll grow on me. Definitely it's unwieldy to look at and hard to find where the paths to the next sphere is without getting up in there to path everything.

That should have the remastered sphere grid then. The idea with the sphere grid is any character can go into any tree, but I've always found their natural progression to be the most fitting. It's easier said than done though. I've played it a dozen times, so it's easier for me.
Oh. Yeah, I had the option between "standard" or "expert" grids and it explained just that. I went with the standard one so I start off with whatever kind of a class the game wants those characters to be.

After his “revelation” he becomes more tolerable, but for the most part… he’s as insufferable as they come for a protagonist. I think my overall beef is how whiny he is.

You’ve gotta plan out every blank sphere dozens of moves in advance if you wanna have any shot at doing it the “right” way, because you essentially have to zoom out and see where grids intersect with other grids, and even then… it’s SO easy to miss a dead end and have to backtrack. The only way I seemed to have any degree of success with the sphere grid was by doing chunks at a time, letting the points build up so I could hit multiple connecting spheres and move on without having to double back over unlocked ones or waste moves to hit every one individually.

I think this was a victim of the voiceovers as it was the first FF with it. The Japanese audio isn't as bad. And his whininess was understood once the story of Tidus is told. Any more than that is spoiler territory and i'm being lazy lol.

This is true of the standard, not sure about the expert. The sphere grids I am used to are not as maze-like. Huge and annoying, yes, but there is only a few spots you need to go the wrong way on to grab a couple buffs. I've never had issues until you reach the end of a tree and need to decide the secondary trees you want to send people.

His voice actor and Wakka’s both irritated me at times.

My issue always came from the lines for the grid’s track that aren’t illuminated beyond where you’ve activated, because they’re significantly harder to notice than the ones colored in to match the character. I couldn’t tell you how many times the ones that I thought went fully clockwise or counterclockwise and ended up being split between two halves pissed me off.

Not gonna get an argument from me there.

Yeah, that was always frustrating. While I played all the FF games on console first, I do usually purchase them on steam after. I prefer this because of mods. Pretty sure there is one I've used that illuminates the grid with unique colors. I could be thinking as mod for 12 though. Can't remember now. Been over a year since my last playthorugh.

Agreed. I spent a good 10 minutes when it first opened to kind of see what was up and where to go and... It was horrible. I could figure stuff out, but it was annoying to traverse and keep track of the paths.

There definitely should've been color there for all the different stats, skills, buffs, and whatnot. Icons are fine, but a dull color that brightens up after you choose it would've made it all seem better.

I agree it's easy to accidentally waste moves by going down a dead end, but otherwise it's straightforward. Just follow the path and activate everything as you go. IIRC there are plenty of nodes to max all stats for everybody in the end, so worst case scenario you have to grind a bit because you wasted sphere levels.

I'm interested in playing FFX but i tried playing the remake on Switch and that whole section after the beginning where you meet Waka (or w/e his name is) is so slow and weird it took me all the remaining willpower I had to get out of that zone and I think i didn't pick it back up since

It picks up the pace after that, but yeah… that first chunk of the game has some weird pacing going from the shit show at the beginning up until probably the end of the Besaid chapter. It’s still kinda tutorial-ish beyond that, but that’s mostly to break up the monotony that would be consecutive tutorials.

Honestly I never really liked the gameplay in FFX. Keeping everybody the same level is really tedious, and if you don't, then you end up having a bad time when you're forced to use them later.
Another reason the steam version is the way to play now. There's an addon where bench teammates earn XP at the same rate.

I never understood why the other characters didn’t level up when the cut scenes show everyone together on the journey with the exception of the obvious story points where there is separation.

Same problem was there in at least 8 and 9. My Rinoa and Quistis in 8 were so under leveled I had to cheese some fights to get through them. 9 wasn't as bad, but the couple times the game forces some party members on you were nasty.

I disagree with Mark, I ended up like Tidus

Its a slow burn, it gets going. Just an old fashion jrpg

It was my first Final Fantasy and my first traditional jrpg

I can see how people would like him, but you gotta admit, he’s a polarizing character, there’s no happy medium.

To me Tidus was the epitome of a cringy character that grows as the game progresses.

When you really stop and think about what he went through in the game, the whole attitude is something understandable.

This topic is making me realize I am coming due for me yearly replay of FF games lol. I think this year will be 8-10 replayed again since 7 remake part two is coming out.

Also I hate how the laughing scene is memed, it really made context in the story at that point

It did! By this point Tidus is still overtly clueless as to what Yuna's mission really is and what it entails. He is coming off a hard truth from Auron in Luca, but he has NO IDEA what being in Luca means to Yuna (I'm too lazy to add spoiler tags so I'm keeping it vague, but if you've played the game you know what I mean).

Plus, it was one of the first mainstream games adding voice overs. Not only that, it's a dub from Japanese where the audio and the visual don't fully sink up. So, it wasn't really as bad as people made it out to be.

It also was the last thing before you get to freely play blitzball, which was polarizing to most.

It makes sense in context but I still feel the English voice acting was a Swing and a miss in that scene.

Dude was definitely in a booth looking at the paper in front of him and not the screen. That kinda stuff stands out in games, TLoU was a good example of a game that made sure voice actors were familiar with the context of a scene.

Tidus has loose morals, especially when it comes to women, from being orphaned at a young age. His parents wanted little to do with him when he was a child. He spent most of his time playing blitzball and as hinted he had one night stands with his fans. He was pretty quick to discard Yuna after FFX2 and move off to Luca to relive his glory days from when he was someone in Dream Zanarkand. Old habits die hard.
