Week 2 NFL Discussion Thread

I believe it's a contract thing with ESPN - they want 16 games a year (or now 17), but the NFL always ends the season with only Sunday games*. So to give them that last game, they do a week 1 doubleheader. I'm not sure why they have switched to doing it in week 2.

I'm also not sure why the games overlap. They used to get a lot of AFC West/NFC West teams since the late time slot could only be a west coast team, but I'd still think that's a better option than having two games on at the same time.

*I was thinking recently that if the reason for ending with all teams playing on Sunday in week 18 is fairness going into the playoffs, that doesn't really make a lot of sense given that some teams play on Saturday, Sunday, and even Monday in the playoffs, so some teams always have less rest than others in the playoffs.

Like you, I started following threads to try to make sense of it. I went to the schedule thinking… “maybe it’s a London game?” BZZZ. Nope. Flex game? Too early in the season. Postponement? Naaah.

Then I finally landed on corporate gains. The MVP of the NFL.

the final week scheduling is so that teams battling for the same playoff spot exert the same level of competitiveness for it, ideally

so if, for example, Teams A & B were battling for the final wild card and B has the tiebreaker, and A was playing C early while B was playing D late; if A loses then B no longer has any reason to play and so BvD would no longer have stakes; I suppose its not so much a matter of keeping things fair as it is making sure as many eyeballs tune into both games as possible

as for the Monday night game, ESPN has a press release about it but it just sounds like them coping over the NFL screwing them around like they love to do

I like Garoppolo and all but never understood why people thought he was such a big upgrade over Carr.
Raiders fans just can't accept that the overall  team is very bad.

I'm a Raiders fan through and through - but I'm not naive.

I'm happy for Carr that he moved on and all these younger Raiders fans who don't know the pain of a QB carousel are quite frankly getting what they deserve right now.

I was predicting 4-13 before the season and so far that doesn't seem far fetched.

Fun factoid. With Aaron Rodgers out, Matt Stafford is the has been in the NFL the longest out of currently starting NFL QBs.

Matt Stafford - 2009
Russell Wilson - 2012
Kurt Cousins - 2012
Ryan Tannehill - 2012
Geno Smith - 2013
Jimmy G - 2014
Derek Carr - 2014
Jared Goff - 2016
Dak Prescott - 2016

If the Cardinals didn't cut Colt McCoy knowing that letting him start would lead to him winning games for them, he'd be the second longest, as he was drafted in 2010.

Lions got held on that TD....
You mean refs are still blowing calls on game deciding plays?

I've seen a lot of really shit calls / no-calls from watching RedZone today.

At least I cheer for a team that's so bad that officiating is a moot point.

Spoiler alert: All teams get fucked over by the refs always. The refs are atrocious. One of the big reasons I stopped watching NFL games for a while is because refs make games painful to watch even if you're not rooting for a particular team.

Tough win for the Chiefs. Jawaan Taylor is going to be an $80 million problem for the next 4 years for us. Playcalling on offence is pretty suspect - just need to slow it down and run the ball a bit. And the receivers need to hold onto the ball and stop fumbling everything.

Thankfully, we have the Bears next week, but the Chiefs need to get things cleaned up.

I missed most of the games today because I'm moving and decided that the Pats was the obvious choice. Love that we're getting the throwbacks again finally. Way better jerseys.

Although I did see the broncos get a bomb at the end of regulation to set up a 2 point conversion. Great play. Didn't close it out obviously.
