Week 1: NFL Discussion Thread

We had a pretty big NFL community at Gamewinners back in the day.

Who does everyone support? What are your hopes/expectations for the upcoming season?

I'm a Chiefs fan (even dating back to my Gamewinners days!), so I've had things pretty good lately. I remember watching this team win 10 games in a 3-year period, so to have Mahomes and Reid leading us to double-digit wins every year is amazing.

I’m over here laughing at the fact that we just handed all that money over to Lamar when he’s known to choke.

Patriots fan crew here, from back in the days before Brady was a thing.

Were you among the crowd cheering as his spiraled last season? Man… his career couldn’t have fizzled out in a more hilarious way, between the headlines and iPads… dude went through a straight up midlife crisis for a subpar season.

Nah. I'm a Patriots fan, not a Brady fan. When he left I didn't start rooting for the Bucs at all.

I became an NFL fan in 2010 when my friends twisted my arm into filling the last spot in their fantasy league. Never looked back really. Chose to start supporting the Texans on the basis that they were the newest franchise, didn't have any notable success so I could go on that journey with them, and at the time at least they looked like they were reasonably well run and set up for some success. Hasn't worked out that way for a variety of reasons, but that's the way it goes sometimes. I like them to win but I also very much enjoy the wider sport. Very much into fantasy as well. Generally start playing best balls a couple of weeks before the draft and then through to the start of the season.

Are you from Cleveland? If not, I think I would have quit being a Browns fan when Deshaun Watson came to town.

Granted, every team has demons to some extent, but the way ownership kept doubling down once he arrived was pretty tough to watch.
Grew up a Browns fan. I can root for other teams, but if they play the Browns, I'd prefer they lose. I'm not going in hard for the Browns rjght now, though, because of Watson.

Thing is, we seem to get vilified despite multiple teams wanting Watson. Only reason the Browns won the Watson sweepstakes was because Haslam offered the entire contract in guaranteed money like a baseball contract.

Saints fan checking in.

I used to be much more into the NFL than I am now. Spent so much time on fantasy football and watched every game I could, regardless of team. But the last several years of shady reffing and being less able to compartmentalize the damage being done to the athletes has made me a very casual fan.

That said, if someone were to get a fantasy league going next season, I might be interested...

Not for nothing…but I think some Viking fans would have a thing or two to say about a Saints fan chirping over shady refs 😜

NFL is so corrupt it’s unreal. But I’ll still be watching every Sunday. 🤷🏻‍♂️

restart yours. id join even though I don't know shit and Tom would have to walk me through the draft again.

I'd join. Tom and bigdaddy probably, and I'm sure we can dig up more here or elsewhere.

The injuries are already piling up this year unfortunately. Nyheim Hines is done for the year (though not a football-related injury), CJ Gardner-Johnson is hurt, and Kardarius Toney also got hurt.

I have no idea why the Chiefs were planning on having Toney return punts. They've consistently said throughout the offseason that he will be our WR1, and he's known to be made of glass, so it was a bad idea to begin with.

It appears he will be back by the start of the regular season, but I also remember the Eric Berry saga of being listed as "day-to-day" for most of the season, so I'm a bit skeptical.

Oh I know he said he's sorry, but yeah more implying that it's just empty words for me at this stage.
Any time someone "apologizes" after getting caught, I assume it's just empty words. You gotta put forth actual effort into correcting your misdeeds, like Michael Vick after he went to jail for organizing dog fighting matches. I heard he did a lot to PROPERLY restore his reputation. You can't always undo what you've done, but you can atone for said actions. Watson has no interest in doing that.

Oh, you mean like Ray Rice? That boy got caught manhandling his girlfriend, went above and beyond to repair his relationship and public image… and was still blacklisted til he aged out. Meanwhile, you hear all about these dudes doing worse and there are crickets. Vick was a good example of someone who fucked up and made up for his past.

Broncos fan here. I don't follow the players on the team, just the team itself. I find the games boring, but I'll keep up with final scores and standings.

As the resident CFL fan here, I need to introduce you all to Nathan Rourke - backup QB for Jacksonville and the dude responsible for this insane play:

He completely lit up the CFL last year until he got injured, but he was probably the best QB I've seen in the league (since Flutie pre-dates me). I wasn't thrilled he landed in Jacksonville because he'll have no shot to play, but at least we can enjoy him in the preseason.

Phew. Not only did he shake them like one of the best, he also threaded the fuck outta the needle on that pass into coverage. Hell of a throw.

Yeah he was something else up here.

Shame the league seems intent on ending itself.

So… uh…

I guess there’s some 90,000 people that have already signed to petition. I’m not sure on the validity of this.

So, the Ravens losing last week ended a 24 game win streak in the preseason.

Sure did. Only streak we had since we like to choke during the playoffs. I didn’t even watch the game… I thought about it for maybe 5 minutes because local news reported them getting into altercations with Washington all week at joint practices. I just didn’t commit to watching because there’s no way either team is gonna let them go at it hard right before the season starts. Last thing either team needs is an injury or suspension.

Bump because it’s football season!!

Excited for tonight! Should be a high scoring and I think close affair… though even without Kelce I think the Chiefs win it.

I have Sun God going in one league and Goff going in the other… unless if I get cold feet and go Tua… hope they’re keeping up all night.

I really wish there was a way for me to watch games easier and cheaper. NFL+ is a great idea if I could cast it to the TV.

I've been through the VPN route to avoid local blackouts, I've done the FuboTVs, YouTubeTVs... I don't want to pay $75+ a month just to watch football. I don't care to watch other teams, I just need the Patriots and whatever is on the national broadcasts at the other time slots.

If the NFL could just release a streaming service that plays the 1pm/4pm games that I would get locally and then the SNF/MNF games I would gladly pay like $40 a month for it.

Closest they had was the DirecTV program they had years ago, but I guess they learned that there’s more money to be made elsewhere by forcing people to use multiple platforms. They’re raking in consistent money from local networks, Amazon, and every other platform they use… I guess that beats one revenue stream from one platform.

Can you access Foxtel via VPN to Australia?
