Nintendo The Legend of Zelda [NES]

So I'm a HUGE Zelda fan but I never actually played through Zelda 1 ever (besides goofing around with the SP version on NSO, which let's be real, DOESN'T count) so me and my buddy added it to the list of games to play and we're making really good progress. As of last night, we have the first 7 dungeons cleared and are like midway through Level-8. We've even stumbled upon Level-9 accidentally by bombing the left Spectacle Rock. It's sorta funny, I should've known Ganon's dungeon would've been there but it's been so long since I've even talked about Zelda 1 that I totally forgot. Once we got in, it was like a "Duh, of course he was there" moment.

I will say though, this game is GREAT. I thought it was going to suck honestly because the swordplay is kinda eh (I don't like how the sword is just like a line in front of you and not an arcing swing) but honestly it's not that big of a deal. The game is really all about preserving your sword beam and there's more ways than it seems like at first glance to get back to full health. When you first play and get to a few hearts then lose them down to 3, it can feel like it's basically impossible to get back to full health again because of how infrequently hearts drop off enemies but there's quite a few Fairy Fountains plus several potion sellers that sell you 2-dose full heal potions.

Something I've really enjoyed with this game is the design philosophy of just bombing shit and setting shit on fire. I went into the game thinking it would be very obtuse about that, and it can be for sure, but many times I already intuitively know things are suspicious because of how long I've been playing Zelda games and my familiarity with the things they tend to do in this game. So like we'll be in a dungeon that has no doors, kill all enemies, and a bomb reward will spawn. My first instinct is immediately to bomb the center of each wall because the fact that I got a bomb drop in a room with no doors is SUSPICIOUS. Same thing when you're in the overworld; you see a lone rock and think SUSPICIOUS so you push it, and next thing you know you've discovered the warp system.

I'll also say Level-6 (haven't played Level-9 so that may be harder) is easily the hardest combat I've done in a Zelda dungeon EVER. There's several rooms with 2 Like Likes, 2 Blue Wizzrobes, and 2 regular Wizzrobes. And man those rooms are HELL. I had the White Sword (middle one) and I had to hit those blue wizzrobe assholes FIVE TIMES to kill them, it's ridiculous. I had to go back and full heal at fairy fountains so many times to make it through that gauntlet. But by the time I did, I felt really good at swordplay and maneuvering around enemies to the point that the combat felt pretty rewarding actually.

So tl;dr this game is legit still kind of a masterpiece to be honest and I'm very pleasantly surprised (i thought this game would lowkey kinda suck). I'm very excited for the challenge that Zelda 2 will pose

Its a constant point of contention in my house as to which game is superior. @Christina swears by LTTP.

I personally prefer the original LoZ to LTTP, which feels bloated to me. But I do recognize why people still consider it the GOAT. Link's Awakening plays just like LTTP really, in a tighter package that appeals to me. Plus it was directly inspired by Twin Peaks, which is my favorite TV show.

I think it does come down to nostalgia for people. I didn't play LoZ until well into my adulthood. LTTP was one of the first, if not the first game I ever fully completed. LTTP is pure just going on an adventure. LoZ has the illusion of saying something bigger, even though I'm not really sure it does. It's more akin to an adventure of the mind.

In a 2010 interview, Link's Awakening director Takashi Tezuka revealed the inspiration for this memorably bizarre cast of characters. "At the time, Twin Peaks was rather popular. The drama was all about a small number of characters in a small town," Tezuka said. "So I wanted to make something like that, while it would be small enough in scope to easily understand, it would have deep and distinctive characteristics."
