I watched it last night. Game and show spoilers below.
Overall, I enjoyed it. This was probably the part of the plot where they were always going to flesh out more than the game because of the setting. I thought the actress who played Dina was excellent, and arguably better than the game, and I can't say I've preferred anyone from the TV show over the game so far. While Ellie eventually grew on me in season 1, I still think the game's Ellie is unbeatable, and in this particular episode, I didn't really like Ellie.
I didn't have a big issue with them showing Abby in this episode, although I thought the actual dialogue of that scene was confusing to me.

I will say this, the first episode of this season seemed like more of a departure from the core story than the first episode of the first season. As you said, they had more stuff to flesh out, and they really didn’t touch on the mechanics of how Jackson is sustaining itself.
Regarding the casting… Ellie’s actress did grow on me over the course of season one, despite her not really being a physical fit for the role. My concern now is the Abby/Ellie fight, because Abby’s actress is nowhere near as physically imposing over Ellie’s actress as she was in the game. It’s going to make for a questionable combat scene, especially since they’re putting more of a focus on Ellie’s combat training. Jesse’s casting was right on the money. Dina seems like a good fit, but, she seems much more… bubbly than her in-game counterpart. Owen? Seems like a classic case of getting an older actor to play a younger role, but, he hasn’t done anything worthwhile yet to stand out as a good fit.

The fuck is that about? Seems like they’re trying to make it into a redemption arc for him before the inevitable.

It's on my list. OCD doesn't allow me to start a new show while watching one. And I don't watch one till the full season is available.
Currently rewatching Burn Notice. Halfway through season 5 of 7.
I also have Daredevil Born Again. Reacher season 4. And now Last of Us season 2. I won't read the spoilers, but I winder if season 2 will follow the game since it means killing of Pedro Pascal and that would make me sad.

Why hasn't anyone said anything bout episode 2 yet?
Totally would have saved me the absolute EMOTIONAL TRAUMA
I have a coworker and boss who have been bugging me all week like "did you watch ep 2 yet??" And I told them they can spoil it for me, I will still watch the show. They said TOMMY died.
I'm marching into work tomorrow to report them to HR!
My husband has had to sit on the couch and hold me for the last hour like "oh here we go

I thought episode 2 was maybe the best episode of the entire series so far. There were some changes from the game but I thought they made the episode way better.
The infected attacking Jackson was really cool. I was not expecting that and it explains some of the mini plot holes that existed in the game.

I don't want to say that it was the best episode, because I tend to judge by the sum of the parts, so I'll reserve that kind of statement for when it's over with. I do agree that it helped close some of the plot holes from the game.
Only one person I know that watches it predicted that it would be in episode 2, and he still is in disbelief that he was right... Because he never is.

Alright, after some sudden and unexpected changes to the schedule this week... We watched the episode last night.
If the Joel scene traumatized viewers, I can think of a couple more scenes that'll inevitably cause more damage.

Watched season 1. Just feels like a cop out from the part 1 remake game on ps5, and the show was rushed because Druckmann was on a time frame schedule. Watched ONLY the first episode of season 2, but I ain't going past that. For anyone who hasn't watched episode 2 season 2 or played the last of us part 2 on ps5, you'll see for yourself what I can't reveal. No spoilers from me...

i don’t watch the show and i never played the games but i knew about Joel’s death because i remember the backlash it caused when it happened and seeing everyone’s reaction to it in the show just makes me think this is how Game of thrones book fans felt with people who just watched the show

I was surprised to see the response to episode 3 in some other places was not the most positive, because I really enjoyed it. As for episode 4:
I need to reiterate that the actress playing Dina is amazing. She is so far ahead of the game's Dina, and is by far the best actress/actor on the show.
The other area that I think the show is beating out the game on is the world building of Seattle and more specifically, the interactions between the WLF and the Seraphites/Scars.
As for what I didn't like, I thought the scene in the movie theatre was very disappointing. I don't understand how Dina says she is pregnant and then her and Ellie instantly get together. It feels very unrealistic, and is obviously quite different from how the game did it.
I also think, while Bella Ramsey is doing a good job with the material she is given, she just isn't Ellie to me. She's playing a very different character to her Part II counterpart in the game. I'm not beholden to the way the game presented the stories, but Ellie was always the most important part, and I don't think they've done it the way I would do it.
The other area that I think the show is beating out the game on is the world building of Seattle and more specifically, the interactions between the WLF and the Seraphites/Scars.
Because of the way that the game is structured and playing as Abby, I feel like it's really hard to understand this relationship between WLF & Seraphites during Ellie's parts of the game unless you've played it before. It felt like that element of the plot was relegated to Abby's part of the story.

Unfortunately, I think the ones talking shit about the episode decided that they thought the episode was going to be shit as soon as they saw the rainbow flag. It's the same bullshit they complained about with the game, and likely other characters like Aloy from the Horizon franchise.
You're right on the money with the world-building, though. They're doing a great job expanding on not only Seattle, but, the conflict between the Scars and WLF. In the game, it felt like we were just thrown into an existing conflict, and the scarce notes that alluded to the conflict were missed by some players, and didn't fill in all of the blanks for others.
