Local Hero stirred some memories within me when he mentioned the SNES Beethoven game. That game was such a pain in the ass, man. I remember playing the hell out of it as a kid. I know I got to the last level, but I don't know if I ever succeeded in finishing it. I watched a longplay of it and it just looks like a complete chore to play.

Family Dog is another one that I remember playing a lot of as a kid. Again, I know I got to the last level, but not sure if I finished it. This game was pure trash. The music is terrible, the gameplay is unfair, and you can get stuck in a glitch at the second-last level that has you looping up and down the stairs, and the only way to get out of it is to turn the game off and lose all progress. Just utter, utter garbage.

Taz-Mania and Beauty and the Beast for Genesis. Both just incredibly difficult from the get-go. I never got past the first level in either one. Check out Taz-Mania if you want to hear some of the worst sound design in all of vidya.

I think I mentioned this one in another thread:

The Ooze (MegaDrive/Genesis)

Then there’s this infuriating example. I’m not sure why I liked this… it wasn’t even really a flight simulator.

Steel Empire (MegaDrive/Genesis)

This one was rebranded for the American market, but this is the one I played.

Ranger X (MegaDrive/Genesis)

And finally… this Mortal Kombat knockoff that had a painful tutorial stage.

Eternal Champions (MegaDrive/Genesis)

I guess Sega games REALLY frustrated me, they’re the only ones coming to mind.

Taz-Mania was brutal but at one point was one of the only Genesis games I had so I spent way too much time with it.

I refuse to go back and look at it now because my  memory says that even though it was unfun hard, the graphics looked very good. I know that if I look up that game, that one positive memory will probably go up in flames.

---

I really wanted to like Eternal Champions. The idea was cool, some of the characters were really cool (I seem to remember that the noir detective dude either got his own spin-off game or was  supposed to). The hidden level fatalities were a SUPER COOL clumsily executed idea that were too hard to figure out in a pre-internet era.

It wasn't until years later that I realized that the game actually just blows.

Widget for NES. I remember being so frustrated with it my parents returned it

That game looks like pure trash. It's like a shitty Mega Man game. But I have to admit that the "cutscenes" (can you call them that?) have some pretty nice art work.

Updated OP post with some hilarious gameplay vids.

You should really check the video I put in OP post. By far the worst sound effects I've ever heard in a video game. Every jump landing sound is different, no consistency at all. The sounds don't even match the actions on screen. It's hilarious!

It's crazy that I hadn't thought about that game in a couple decades maybe but I can clearly recall those weird ass jump noises without even hitting play.

I guess it's memorable at least.

Man, more suckers that remember Eternal Champions? I rented the game on a lark way back in the long, long ago and think about it every now and again. Like ClayFighter, Primal Rage and Killer Instinct I haven't really looked at, nor played, it in... a lifetime. I just assume everything from back then sucks until proven otherwise. :chuckle

Slightly more recent, but also randomly comes to mind in a similar fashion:

Flying Dragon (N64)

I don't know if it was actually terrible or not, but the fucking background song from this game (around 4 minutes into the video below) has lived rent free in my noggin for damn near 30 years:

Claymates (SNES)

And to round out the list (for now lol), this... this thing.

Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight (NES)

Why do you gotta bring up Primal Rage and Killer Instinct? You’re asking to send one of us to the hospital with an aneurysm. Both are equally as infuriating as any of the others I’ve recognized in this thread.

So I genuinely haven't seen these games in decades. OH. MY. BA-GOD?! This is far, far worse than my memory told me - and it was already telling me it was bad. 🤣

DID YOU KNOW PRIMAL RAGE HAD TOYS/ACTION FIGURES? I NEVER OWNED THE GAME BUT I SOMEHOW ENDED UP WITH THE FULL SET OF TOYS AS A KID.

Primal Rage (SNES)

Prior to Microsoft resurrecting the IP, I feel like KI was just known as the game "C-C-C-C-Combo Breaker!" came from. From back before memes were called memes, even! ...It's definitely the most, uh, "good" of these 3 games. But I would maybe not say it was actually good. :chuckle

Killer Instinct (SNES)

...What are these voices? WHAT IS THIS THEME SONG? I legitimately don't remember this. Hoooly shit, that changes nothing everything. And they blew all their budget on that so the stages don't have BGM? No it does, my volume was just at the right setting so only the voices were audible. That would have made it better though! 😂

One of my relatives had this game and we used to always play it at their house. Skimming through the video brought back some good memories. I always liked playing as Cinder.

Alright, fucker, if you’re going for the knockout… ready for the uppercut?

Ecco. The. God. Damn. Dolphin.

If you’ve played it, it wasn’t on your original console controller for long.

Same, same. Think I gravitated more towards Fulgore, but certainly killed a couple of weekend afternoons with the game.

Man, me and my brother used to think Primal Rage was SO cool when we were kids. And hell, I still think Killer Instinct looks cool
It's such an easy, winning move. Kaijus were huge at the time, and dinosaurs are always an instant win for young boys.

I think, if someone cared enough to try, they could easily make Primal Rage into a good game. I'unno how it would do sales-wise, but yeah.

Haha, yes! I don't know how far into Ecco I got, but it wasn't too terribly far. Certainly not far enough for the game to discard the whimsy and deep dive into existential dread, otherwise it would've been the catalyst for my irrational fear of deep waters instead of Mario 64 and Banzjo-Kazooie. :rofl

What was wrong with primal rage? I remember always playing it at my friend’s house and having fun with it
Same thing that's wrong with most fighting games, really. Poor balance between characters, stiff/rigid movement, limited defensive options. It's easy to have fun when messing around, but fighting games in particular chafe easily since it's just going head-to-head with the computer or trying to be competitive with friends.

It's the Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat problem, except turned up a couple notches. :chuckle

That makes sense. I loved the blue dinosaur with the long neck. I could just spam the attack where I crouch and stretch out my neck and attack. Such a long reach, I’d never lose

I feel like you're triggering a memory of why my brother stopped playing this game against me...
My friend got mad at me because it was his birthday and he was on a 4 person win streak, then I broke it and suddenly he didn’t want to play anymore. I wonder why

I've played some random games in the past, including that Street Fighter game that Raine posted. I thought that was the first SF game, but it wasn't even related to the series we all know about.

I've also played pieces of Sonic R, Tempest 2000 for the Jaguar, Frogger Beyond, Darkened Skye (the Skittles game).

I also got pretty good at Konami's Street Fighter knockoff that was only released on the Gameboy called "Raging Fighter".

I've played a decent chunk of the horrible Soldier of Fortune Payback. Rayman Arena was unplayable BEFORE the Windows Vista broke its DRM and made it impossible to install.

Then there are those budget PC games you used to see on store shelves. Such classics as Elite Forces: WWII Normandy, Elite Forces: Navy Seals, Vietnam Black Ops (not related to those crummy Vietcong games), Mobile Forces, Tactical Ops Assault on Terror (CS knockoff), among others.

The greatest is a game from T7 Games called "The Mark". I saw this thing at Gamestop brand new for 30 bucks. Man, is it not worth 30 bucks. It's a totally generic FPS except the twist is you can play as two different characters who have different motivations. The campaign is the same for both characters, the only difference being the ending you get. It's been a while but I'm pretty sure one of them screws the other over. It's also got online co-op so if another person in the entire world besides me still owns a copy and wants to play, we could.

I did record a clip of me playing this suuuuper rough game.

The lighting, the saturation, the movement, the sound... it's all so hideous 😭
