Microsoft Starfield Megathread

Starfield, an upcoming OWRPG from Bethesda, is coming out on September 6th (September 1st for Constellation members). I plan on fully dedicating my life to this game, and will overhaul this thread once I get going. Until then, anyone else looking forward to this game? Anyone playing on day one or early release?

I just got my Starfield controller in. I wanted to play with mouse/keys, but the controller is too god damn perfect not to use.

Can't wait for it. Hoping it's not so good it completely eclipses sea of stars and armored core, since I'll also have to play both of those when I finish up my vacation.

I made sure to pick the adoring fan trait. Other than that, I'm going stealth archer with a minor in smacking people in the head with a legendary rescue axe I found off the first pirate I killed.

How is everyone doing so far?

I have been hearing some not-good things about this game. But in this thread you wouldn't know it, all of you sound really excited.

I am trying to reserve judgement until more reviews come out. No matter how good it is though, I have lost trust in Bethesda and won't pre-order from them again until I see reviews. Also wondering if, in the future, mods will come to save the day again and if the team leans too much on them.

The first 5 hours were very tough. I was nervous I wasn't going to like it. 15 hours in, I am hooked
This is pretty lined up with the headlines I've seen. I saw one article that said the first 12 hours are really clunky and you kind of need to get past that.

Yeah at first I was underwhelmed with it feeling more like Fast Travel: The Game than a space exploration RPG and the early dialogue was very uninspired.

As I put more into it, I'm definitely getting more out of it however. The writing definitely picks up as you get into more side quests and such. A lot of fun emergent gameplay situations too.

I would love to play it but I don't have an Xbox and this is the first game that my PC doesn't hit the minimum requirements. It's a sad day. It used to be a beast of a gaming laptop and now it's whimpering into the night... So sad. I've been looking forward to it for a long time.

Just because it doesnt hit the minimum doesnt mean it cant run decently, is there a demo?

I still strongly recommend this game. It's going to be a while to do everything. Like, a looooong burn.
Are you on Xbox or PC? Is it good enough for me to finally take a plunge on an Xbox?

No demo but you can play/try for free with a game pass subscription. I think their 2 week free trial is currently suspended due to the release, though.

I'm on PC playing via game pass. I have around 40-50 hours so far. If you liked Fallout/Elder Scrolls games, and also liked Mass Effect, you will love this game.

Does it have to be tough or are you playing on a high difficulty?

With zero shame, I play these games on easy. (There's a very easy setting but I'm good with easy lol) Primarily because I'm more invested in the dialogue over firefights. So when I said it was tough, I meant it was tough for me to get into it - not from a difficulty perspective, but from a "do I even like this?" perspective.

I think I had initial unfounded expectations that weren't met, in the form of comforts or familiarity of previous titles from Bethesda. Two examples that still stand out are lack of actual maps and the inventory UI. I understand the maps thing at this point, but it was a hard adjustment. Since everything is proc gen, every planet and its topography is unique, with some scripted things remaining. There would be no actual way to map planets, however, they should have mapped towns that are concrete to the game (not proc gen).

The inventory system is rough and a step back from Fallout 4 - much to my dismay. This is the one thing I'm hoping gets adjusted, or at least fixed by a mod. There's no more universal connection to a "workshop storage" so all crafting materials must either be on your ship or on your person when crafting. That proved to be way more tedious than I thought. My ship cargo hold can hold 1140kg, and that has filled up surprisingly fast.

That being said, these are flaws I am much past caring about. It's not impacting my experience in a bad way, but encouraging me to try new ways. I used to be a hoarder in Fallout and it's not exactly wise for this game.

Did you ever beat it and get to the end?

Starfield has become my top favorite game. I started out on easy and have slowly eased up the game's difficulty settings as I've gotten to level 100. I'm on my 5th NG+ of the game. I've done quests and bounty boards multiple times. Stolen class c ships and just really living it up in the game. I love starborn armor, I know it gets some hate from fans, but armor modding perks isn't that great by comparison so I just don't bother with it. I mostly focused on ship and combat perks starting out.

I took a little break. I got pretty bored of doing the same things multiple times.

I kind of wish that they'd go ahead and release the Shattered Space DLC.
Yeah, I didn't want to be a buzzkill, but I completely stopped around the second week of October. I had anticipated the game would be much bigger than Skyrim with tons of replayability. I was very wrong.

I'm not even sure I'll redownload when the DLC comes out, knowing I'll blast through it in hours and then be back to having nothing to do. I'm just baffled by Bethesda on this one. I tried ignoring the salty subreddit posts about it, but damn, I agree with most of them now.
