Fool's other thread about Master System games made me remember why I was so late to jump on the SNES train.

It's because I had this beautiful thing;

1720675256111.jpeg

It was the SEGA Multi-Mega CD in the UK. I think it was the SEGA Genesis CDX in the US. Regardless, I'm pretty sure this was my introduction to console gaming since I'd mostly played stuff on my Amiga 500+ prior to getting this for some Christmas/birthday gift. Probably when I was like 7 or 8, as I'm sure I didn't get it immediately on it's release in 1994.

It was the shit, and I'm pretty mad I traded it to a friend for something... I can't even remember what. Probably a ton of burnt PS1 games or something equally not worth anything. But I also traded my Game Gear for some pittance of cash while on a school-trip to Switzerland, so that I could buy a rotisserie chicken on the street, so apparently I was just a little idiot when it came to retaining things.

Anyway, it sent me down a rabbit hole of trying to remember some of the games I'd had on it, and so far I've come up with these three.

Sonic CD

I bought a Sega Genesis and Sega CD and a few games recently. They're waiting for me back in Canada. I'll finally be able to play it when I get home for Xmas. Particularly looking forward to Snatcher and Popful Mail.

Sonic CD is an excellent game. I always felt it was very underrated.

I feel like its usually considered one of the better 2d sonics

Snatcher is great, I've heard good things about Popful Mail. The Shining Force game is good, and then you have the two Lunar games as well. Im sure there are a few others too that are worth playing

You named the major ones I know.

Also are Rise of the Dragon for an underrated Snatcher-like game, Spiderman Vs King Pin and Prince of Persia for souped up versions compared to the Genesis, and Soul Star for a cool Star Fox-like game.

I only ever heard of Sega CD fairly recently. It's been interesting learning about all these games I never knew existed but which look fantastic.

Funny enough I've always had trouble trying Sonic CD when I consider Sonic 3 + Knuckles to basically be peak 2D platforming of the era. The level layouts confused me when I played and lowkey I was kinda sad the spritework and sound effects sounded worse than 3+K (Sonic CD looks like Sonic 2 when I think the aesthetic had a big leap in 3+K)

Sonic & Knuckles was the best. Cartridge Loadable Content was the greatest idea of all time.

I'm not a huge fan of Sonic cd, I do think it's good but it reminds me too much of Yoshi's Island where it's a giant air hanger type level instead of a more directed left to right experience, I just don't think that works in a Sonic game with a timer

confession: one of the chief reasons i bought the 32x was to build my own tower of power
I kinda want to buy a 32X just so I can get Star Wars Arcade, Shadow Squadron, and near Arcade perfect ports of After Burner and Space Harrier.

I've been more interested in the 32X than the Sega CD as either the games are FMV nonsense or excessively expensive for the Sega CD. The Sega CD has the best console version of Earthworm Jim (not including the HD remake), but it's stupid expensive. The games I'd want for the 32X are not expensive.

TBF, considering how cheap the Game Gear and many games can be had for, street meat was probably a decent trade.

The Game Gear along with the original Xbox are among the cheapest consoles to collect for.

Huh, I was just thinking about Earthworm Jim recently. It might have been the Mega-Drive that I had Earthworm Jim 2 on, pretty sure it was a cartridge and not CD.

Huh, I guess... But at the time I definitely missed the TV Tuner I had with it, since it absolutely picked up French porn on the coach ride overnight. Might be why it was in demand and I talked someone out of their remaining francs. 🤔

Earthworm Jim 2 got a release on the Genesis, SNES, Saturn, and Playstation. Earthworm Jim 1 got releases on the Genesis, SNES, Sega CD, Gameboy, and Game Gear.

Both got PC and GBA ports. Only the first hit digital arcades on the PS3 and 360 as an HD remake.

The one I remember playing the most was the one with the "Jim becomes a blind cave salamander" level, with Moonlight Sonata as background music.

That's the second one.

Just for reference, here are a couple solid version comparison videos:

Earthworm Jim 1:

Earthworm Jim 2:

Edit: Confession: I've not played either Earthworm Jim game. While the animation looks really good, and the music is good based on videos I've watched, the maps look confusing as all fuck. At some point I'd like to get both games on Genesis or SNES, but they're not really a priority and I rarely see them in stores, if ever.

The 32x library is smaller than the Sega CD library in terms of good games, but both consoles have some pretty expensive ones.

Web of Fire for the 32x (Spider-Man game) is very expensive, but it's also supposed to be complete trash. It also has some games like Kolibri, Pitfall, and Chaotix, all of which I'm interested in owning, but each of which are a couple hundreds dollars or more.

I think Sega CD has the most expensive game of the two. Keio Flying Squadron goes for around $2k. I never understood why shoot'em-ups and cute'em-ups tend to be the most expensive genres. They're such short games and the gameplay is usually pretty same-y

If I remember correctly it doesn’t work with the genesis game genie
You can't use it with the 32X nor Sega CD, and doesn't support RGB output. Supposedly, it was a budget release. Like that crappy Wii Mini that removes component out, any networking, and the SD card reader.... it also didn't have Gamecube backwards compatibility.

I remember it was cheap because I bought it with my own money (didn’t have a lot of it) when I was 11 or 12
