Multi Outer Worlds

Anyone played this game?

I decided to give it a shot as Im waiting for Baldur's Gate III and Starfield to come down in price a little bit. Really enjoying it. Love the Obsidian touch and how their games are more narrative and character focused. Biggest difference between it and FO4 is the world feels alive and is a place that would move on with out me and was moving on before me. Fallout 4 felt very static. Sure the gameplay and exploration are better in FO4, but I feel like Im actually role playing in Outer Worlds. Also love the colors and art direction

I was quite satisfied the first 10-15 hours. The deeper I got, the more disappointed I got. The end is very unpolished. I don't want to ruin your experience or anything, but I don't even bother recommending the game to people anymore. I took a week off from work to play it and felt so stupid at the end of that week lol. I'd be curious to see if it ever improved after the DLC but when I found out I had to buy it, I didn't even bother. I'm glad you're liking it, though. It's not as bad as it is unfinished, in my opinion. If they spent a little more time crafting the settlements to be more like Edgewater, I'd probably have it on the yearly roster of games to play. But man they fell short with all the cutting. The Rizzo's main planet was cut basically down to the core, to the point where some parts of the questline don't really make sense. If you can be okay with how the game forces your hand in the main quest, it's probably the most enjoyable thing in the game. I liked figuring out the mystery.

Pros: Edgewater (by far the best planet), companion quests/interactions, dialogue-heavy, speechcraft is important, vending machine jingles
Cons: End game, majority of settlements, end game, lots of high skill check areas with limited ways to level said skill, end game, can easily outrun any challenge (like the planet you can't land on but in reality you can just run), end game.

I feel like this is a pretty good assessment of the base game. I, too, haven’t had the opportunity to check out the DLC, but agree on all of the points you’ve made.

For what it’s worth, the game itself is fun. I thoroughly enjoyed the differences between it and other games you’d associate with it because of Obsidian (Fallout: NV, let’s be real). If they would have spent more time hashing out the plot lines and expanding upon certain areas, I think it would have had the potential to be ranked higher up there. My biggest issue was the abundance of depth at the front of the game, and the trickle down towards the end. I loved the various environments in the game, it was a nice change of pace from the usual open world games where the only change you ever see is water, beach/desert, grass, hill, and mountain environments in that regionally progressive fashion.

All in all, if you catch Outer Worlds on sale… I’d definitely recommend picking it up, shoot for the complete version with the DLC if it ever comes up on sale just to add some more substance to it. Although I haven’t played the DLC, I will say that I was dissatisfied with the amount of content in the base game. Especially after the end of the main story.

@Tommy Boy & @Mark I have heard similar things about the last third or so

Also I've heard the DLC is better than the main game

If that’s the case, I don’t think there’s much of a price difference between the complete edition and the base game. I managed to catch the base game on sale on the PS store, but at the time the complete game was quite a bit more and I didn’t want to spend the money if I didn’t end up liking it. If you get it, let me know what you think of the DLC, please, and I might check it out.

I do have the complete edition and I'll let you know

I found it fun, nothing with any depth but it was fun and quirky. It only took me 25 hours to complete which is perfect, and I agree with Tommy, the beginning was great and I started losing interest toward the end.

I also went to a new planet halfway through and was wanted by the authorities once I entered the settlement... no idea what I did so I murdered the entire town and missed out on whatever quests were there. But I figured it would be canon that I destroyed the town and kept that save file. Wonder what I missed out on.

Preeetty sure I did the same exact thing, and it was some planet I didn’t have the pass to land on or whatever it was called. I only found out later on when I had looked it up that it was some string of side-quests I had to complete in order to obtain it, but by that point I had already raided their riches and sorted the bodies by who still had stuff I couldn’t carry and who was empty.

Im almost done with one of the DLCs and really enjoying the DLC, its a murder mystery. Lot of fun.

Yeah not as much depth as I would hope, though I do like the choices I got in say how I handled Edgewater

I've heard that DLC is a decent departure from the base game and would eventually try it.

I ended up enjoying both DLCs a lot, without them I wouldnt be as high as I am on the game

I for the most part enjoyed my time with it and it mostly did what I wanted it to, but has its flaws. I played the Spacer's Choice edition with the DLC

Gameplay

I enjoyed it, but the enemy AI was really bad at times

The perks were really disappointing, I dont know if there were even 15 that wowed me, by the time I beat the game I was round level 42 and had 21 or so perks.

The flaw system is interesting, but the flaws never seemed worth it given how underwhelming most of the perks are
I did enjoy how the skill point system and hope to see that back

Story
Main story was interesting enough, as I had read, it does kind of ends with a whimper. The two DLCs were really good and without those I probably wouldnt be as high on the game as I am.

As usual the Obsidian charm and humor is here in spades and I'm all for it.

I enjoyed most of the characters I came across, they did their jobs well.

Companions

I only got 4 of them, I liked the four I got personality wise. Felix, Nyoka, Max and Pavarti. I didnt think I would end up liking Max but he really grew on me. I mostly rolled with Nyoka and Pavarti, I liked their game play and personality. Felix was my 3rd choice but his special ability was very lackluster and he's not as fun as Nyoka

Never ran into Ellie which is a shame, I might have liked her sociopathic persona. Never met SAM, didnt explore the ship too much.

Exploration and the world

Is this game play? Technically yes. But anyway, exploration was rather underwhelming. I know they're a small a studio, so I get why it was more linear. I did like the few worlds we got to go to, they were beautiful and felt alien, but lack of real exploration was a disappointment. I loath Byzantium, getting around is a pain, reminding me of the strip in New Vegas, but at least a lot of fast travel points.

The world does feel a live/it was existing before and would go on without the main character. Where Fallout 4 just feels like it was waiting for your character to arrive.

While there werent a lot of big choices that affected the world, I did appreciate the couple that were there as I love more options and choices to quests

Overall
I do think this game is worth your time with the DLC. Without it its kind of lacking in content and places to explore. It's a fun game that while not up there with the likes of the Original Fallouts or New Vegas, it will still scratch that itch some

Final Rating: B

Thanks for the review… I think I’m gonna commit to the DLC next time I grab something from the PS store. You answered everything I was curious about. I will say that you missed out on an entertaining combat companion in SAM, especially at low and high difficulties. There’s something entertaining about watching him obliterate east opponents or try like hell against difficult ones. As far as Ellie… I recruited her, and did her quest line. It was kinda lackluster, but you can get a decent amount of credits by completing it if you’re short of them.
