Nintendo Nintendo Direct - June 21, 2023

Did anyone catch the most recent Nintendo Direct? What are you looking forward to from it?

I will definitely buy the Super Mario RPG remake at some point, and I will likely get Super Mario Bros. Wonder down the line as well. One nice surprise was the Pikmin 1/2 re-releases. They aren't too pricy as a package, and I've never played anything from that series before, so it seems like a no-brainer.

The Princess Peach game will be intriguing as well, although there was too little information to really make any kind of assessment.

Overall, I was really happy with the Direct. My only complaint is that I wish they put a date on the Wave 5 DLC for Mario Kart.

I still haven't gotten around to watching the silly thing, but I reckon the shelf life for this is about done. So, whatevs.

Seeing Super Mario RPG being remade was absolutely crazy. That was my very first RPG, before I knew what "RPG" was, and I didn't finish it. If memory serves I got stuck on the pirate ship, with the password puzzle whose answer was "Pearl." I swear on everything that I got it right on the first try, however, the game said it was wrong. So for the rest of my rental time I was furiously trying to put in any combination of letters I could think of. Except Pearl, because that was the very first one I tried and I knew that wasn't the right answer. I must've typo'd it or didn't know how to actually spell it or something. šŸ˜‚

I came away from the experience still not knowing what RPG was or meant. I just thought it was a word they made up. The moral of the story is that I was a stupid kid what can't do words. Still can't. Nothing's changed!
My second RPG was... Quest 64. I finally learned what RPG meant after playing the Pizza Hut demo for Final Fantasy VIII, which I immediately had to buy.

The Star Ocean: Second Story remake, similarly, is... surprising. Square did a faithful remake/up-res/port for the Vita, which I think everyone sort of expected to get the same treatment as First Departure: Porting/remastering that for PS4/PS5/Switch (QQ Xbox, FU SE). So getting this "2D x 3D" remake is nice, though I actually wanted to see them throw caution to the wind and fully remake it using SO6/Divine Force's engine. That would have been the highlight of my year. As-is, I don't think I like "2D x 3D" anywhere near as much as I like Octopath Traveler's "2.5D" aesthetic. It might grow on me, it might not. We'll see.

Definitely gotta pick up Pikmin while that's available, too. No history whatsoever with that series so far, but Overlord on the X360 was basically a ripoff and I liked that so should be a fun romp one day. Will get Persona 5 Tactica and the Metal Gear Solid Collection (again lol) on Xbox for achievement suffering, but good Switch owners can enjoy those too.

I'm really excited for SMRPG and Wonder. Though I'm conflicted about the former because I already have it on the Wii virtual console and abandoned it halfway through. I don't remember much of anything about the playthrough, but part of me wants to play the original rather than the remake even though it looks really nice. What I'd really like is a new Paper Mario that's actually good, though. Recently replayed through TTYD and am currently replaying 64 and I miss it so much man. Really sucks that they killed the series.

Wonder looks great too and I'll definitely be getting it. Pikmin is interesting but I've only played #2. I want to go back and play the rest of the series before I jump into the newest one. The Peach game looks really interesting and I'll probably get the Luigi's Mansion 2 remake so I don't have to play it on a handheld. Aside from that the only other things I cared about were the Mario Kart characters and Metal Gear games. I've wanted to get into the MGS series for years so it's pretty tempting.
