Mobile Mobile ports of games - yay or nay?

Not talking about something being ported to a handheld gaming system here - more phone or iPad. What are your thoughts on it? What have you played? Did you like it?

I played final fantasy 2 on my phone (iOS) and enjoyed it once I got used to it. I also have chrono trigger and enjoy it when I play (although always forget so I’m only about halfway through after five years). I tried GTA3 and never really got anywhere with it, though.

I played GTA:VC years ago on one of my old Android phones. Never again… with the phone by itself anyway. I’ve heard of people connecting controllers and being just fine, but, I can’t deal with the touchscreen UI.

Older games, like the Pokémon series ROMs, were much more manageable since they were made with limited player mobility, but unless I played in portrait mode and held it like a GameBoy, it just didn’t feel right.

Totally cool with it, but I don't do much of it, myself.

The only game I ever played this way was I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, and boy, what an absolute dogshit game. Excellent short story, terrible game.

I've never tried it because it seems like it'd be horrible. The screen is so small, the controls are very limited, and the game was not designed with those limitations. Ports usually suffer from a lot of control and interface problems because they weren't designed for the platform. I'm looking at you, every PC-to-console port that makes me use the joystick like a mouse in menus. Or they completely ignore control conventions - I once played a game for several hours before I realized jumping was possible because it was mapped to triangle. Ports almost universally suffer from nonsense like that which games designed for a platform never do. I can only imagine the UX nightmares that ports to mobile suffer from. Hard pass.

Wow, that's surprising to me. That game was one of the best of the genre in the mid-90s.

I'm gonna chalk it up to being a product of it's time and it not being a great game for mobile.

soft locking the player from the true ending if they miss a single item at the very start of the game is dumb

Its not exactly the type of game where you should expect to get any "true ending" on your first playthrough.

I also don't recall it having a "true ending" rather than "a bunch of possible endings" but that could just be the ravages of time on my brain.
