I didn't try any MGS games until like a year ago playing MGS1 for PSX. The game wasn't like a 10/10 to me but it was very good and I loved the cinematic nature and the story was sick too.
After a while I went through and plays MGS2, 3, then recently 4. I was totally blown away and it was super cool seeing the lives of both Solid Snake and Big Boss and the differences/similarities between the two. MGS4 as a whole was totally insane and honestly I'm so out of touch with the reception of the games that I feel like I prefer the "wrong" games compared to what people like but I thought MGS4 was easily the best game as a package with MGS2 coming in close in second. I probably couldn't go on about MGS4 enough but after having played MGS1-3 it was such a nostalgic experience even if I only just recently played the games. Watching Liquid Snake meet Solid and follow him all the way to the end of MGS4 with Ocelot was so cool and that final fight was so satisfying. Like there were only several moments in the game that were just really emotional.
MGS2 in particular is definitely going to be the game that sticks with me the most though. MGS4 was the culmination of those first 3 games obviously and they tried to close every thread and give closure to the stories and characters, but in terms of MGS2 the lesson it teaches the player is kind of harrowing. My perception as I was actually experiencing the gameplay at the end with all the AI stuff was pretty wild and it was certainly a bit to process; but thinking about it in hindsight and letting it stew in your head it's kind of scary how well it applies to our current age.
I interact with my parents and they're constantly fooled by fictional news, photoshopped images, and false narratives that flood social media. And when you think about what you can do about it to protect yourself and the people you care about, you have to realize there's not much you can do about it and it feels like this chaos is destined to take over. It almost makes you wish you could just control the whole thing yourself so nobody can screw it up. And it's in those realizations that I sort of realized in the story of MGS (and analogized into the real world) it's not so easy as to just identify the good and the bad; the ideal the Patriots AI wanted is rooted in good intentions and a desire to protect people from falsehood, but we also realize as players that forcing that "goodwill" onto others can also be bad. It just leaves me mulling on the questions of what it means to be good and bad, if those are even the right words to consider, and the correlation good and bad have with the wellbeing and preservation of humankind.
Truly the most terrifying game I've played despite having no scares.
