I JUST heard about this and I'll proffer some information once I've looked into what their plans are.

Initial thoughts is they have EXPANSIVE lore and I can easily see movies based on the planeswalkers and omenpaths for a massive cinematic universe. Throw in the Phyrexian big bads and the story is already written. But this would need to be handled more in the way D&D: Honor Among Thieves and Borderlands were handled and less int he way the forgettable original trilogy was handled.

I would prefer less comedy though as the lore doesn't support the comedy aspect the same way D&D does.

The extent of my MTG knowledge is that slivers are annoying.
This is accurate. The only thing worse are the Eldrazi. 😡

D&D: Honor Among Thieves
Yes, absolutely!

That's what perked my interest, because they're very similar IPs and they did really well with D&D HAT. Even not knowing MTG that well, I'd be very down for another good fantasy franchise.

Borderlands
No, never!

I honestly have never tried watching the Borderlands movie, because it just seems so... Not Borderlands. Like they completely forgot what the vibe of the game was. No crazy weapons or anything.

D&D is also a part of the MTG universe thanks to the Universes Beyond sets. They exists in the same reality, different plane.

The only reason I bring that up (because I too have yet to watch that movie) is simply because it was more a whimsical interpretation in the same way D&D HAT was, and less trying to take itself seriously for the sake of it (I'm looking at you Jumanji).

I did see a little more about this now too. It's still in the VERY early stages so were a good few years away, which is fine. The truly hopeful part is that Hasbro is teaming with Legendary films for this. They are responsible for the Dune movies, the newest Godzilla movies... like, they are no joke when it comes to HUGE movies and large monsters. So, this has me cautiously optimistic. They plan a movie to set the stage and additional movies and television to bring into the universe after that, which I think is more "Let's see how much money the movie makes before committing to the whole universe." Hasbro is in it for the money, not the fans.

There is nothing yet on script or story, which is fine, but I'll leave it squarely on the cautiously optimistic part of the scale exclusively because it's Legendary films.

Also, they need to take into account Chandra is a lesbian. Not sure how they would handle that given the current climate.

i remember when in the late 2010s the russo brothers moved from the MCU to being showrunners for an ambitious netflix MTG series that never got off the ground. i predict the same will happen with this. the lore is just too fluid and MTG doesn't have the cultural cache that DND does
That series is still planned. The Russo's and their writers just stepped away.

"still planned" and "never got off the ground" can co-exist! i didn't think the russos were the right people for the job anyway but i'll be shocked if it ever escapes development hell.
