Ice to Meet You (another weather related thread)

Over the next couple days, we're forecast to receive 10 inches of ice and snow (in STL). Shopped ahead with the anticipation of not being able to leave (safely).

NE Ohio, NW PA, and like all of New York has been getting hit with lake effect snow from Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Southern Ontario is getting a lot of stuff from Lake Huron. Almost all of the plains are going to be covered in a layer of snow (North Dakota doesn't count). Washington is getting slammed with a lot of rain and/or snow.

Lots of weather going on right now.

Edit: My water pipes are insulated now (well, most of them).

Looks like all the new snow is through that middle corridor. It can stay there, I've got to drive to ME next week and I'd rather there not be snow on the ground.

It's going to be fairly cold for about a week from the looks of it. I got a good 4-5 inches of snow on my car right now. Luckily I don't need to be anywhere atm, so it can stay like that for now.

... I should probably invest in a milwaukee leafblower so that I could just air bend that shit off of it.

I took this yesterday while the wind was whipping around because I thought it was wild that it created a 23 degree difference.

Before I had a garage, I had a windshield cover and it was a life saver, still had to get snow off but that was always easy compared to scraping the windshield

I guess a car cover as a whole would be perfect for this

Unless you end up with that layer of ice on the cover under the snow. A layer of ice on top of the cover isn’t too bad, but the other way makes for a difficult job.

I've seen the odd flake today but nothing serious. Just cold.

It has been doing that on and off here for the last couple days, with the lightest dusting on grass if we’re lucky. Schools are already closed tomorrow from western to central Maryland, so I guess we’ll see.

oof just lost power. power company sent text stating restoration time is unknown.

this is probably going to be the longest I've gone without power since I failed to pay an electric bill ages ago.
Good luck. That sound unpleasant, depending on your heating set up.

I do understand why so many houses in Maine retain the old iron stoves, etc. If you get hit by an ice storm and have no power, at least you don't freeze.

I have no alternative heating source. my water heater and blower require electricity. it was running up until the moment the powet cut off. if the power is out for a long time, I'll just have to get a hotel tomorrow.

Edit: Power came back up a couple hours later.

Midwest checking in. Everything is shut down today. The highways were a nightmare, jack knives, ice, people trapped. To top it off EMS is getting calls because of the increased heart strain from shoveling.

I am also so, so, so fucking sick of the north laughing at the suffering happening. We're NOT Minnesota! We're NOT Canada! Okay! We deal with ice storms and snow storms too but we just don't have the same infrastructure in place as you! We don't regularly have tire chains! How hard is this to understand? Holy shit, different places north and south have different levels of preparedness for this??? Get the fuck out

I have tried for years to explain this shit to people, and it just doesn’t click until they experience it for themselves… which is why out-of-towners in places like that end up becoming a statistic.

Saint Louis is a horrible place to drive in this weather because everyone is driving around with bald tires and beat up vehicles that likely can't pass inspection (hence the lack of a license plate on many vehicles here).

it gets to me, this happens EVERY time. A certain subset acts REALLY smug. They see videos online of us sliding on ice. "Don't you know about cat litter bro?" "These guys have no idea what to do with one inch of snow, meanwhile WE regularly get 2 feet!!11" "Bro look at how they over correct, don't they KNOW"

Dude. Shut. Up.

If it makes you feel better - a lot of Canadians don't know shit about driving in those conditions either. I witnessed a pile-up that was at least a dozen cars over the holidays that was likely caused by following too closely in freezing rain weather.

Evidently their cat litter (who btw I don't know anyone who uses this) couldn't help them.

I feel like when it's a dusting or a couple inches it is legit to make fun of us, that shit happens every year here, we should be used to it but my city acts like they have never seen it .

this though is much more than usual and very out of the norm. We are prepped to handle the occasional couple inches, but not this

Dude. Shut. Up.

Then, when you factor in vehicle availability in a particular region… for example, you’re not going to find many AWD/4WD vehicles in Texas or California. The dealerships might stock a few, but the rest are deliveries.

Then, you factor in the infrastructure. California is used to fighting fires. Texas is used to tumbleweeds or whatever. Each area gets budgetary support for their most prominent issues… if you live in a state that sees an inch of snow every year or two, guess what? Y’all aren’t gonna have a lot full of plows and domes full of salt at the ready like we do in the Mid-Atlantic.

Hell… we’re relatively acclimated to winter weather, and I can echo the sentiment others have shared that most people tend to forget how to drive in the shit between fronts, throw a season or two in-between and half of these fools on the road act like they don’t know what snow looks like.

NY governor declared a state of emergency got the western counties out near Buffalo and Niagra. Said the lake effect snow could be 3 feet, with it feeling like negative 20.

It was 4 degrees here when I woke up.

Very fucking cold.
