I downloaded emulators for the originals and the G/S/C series a couple years ago on my work computer so I could have something to play during idle time, and I quickly realized how much I forgot about the game. Same goes for TCG. After a while, stuff started coming back to me… but, I’ll just admit it, I’d be embarrassed if I tried to answer.

I'm surprised (and a little embarrassed) I remember these ganes so well in comparison to y'all 😅

I think the last time I played the game was about 11 or 12 years ago, so that might be more recent than some of y'all, but still, I played the shit out of these games as a kid.

Playing through SoulSilver right now realizing how much of this game I completely forget lol. Let's Go Pikachu logged my memory on Kanto, though. But Johto? Woof.
G/S were my all-time favorites though. I wonder if I'd know pics from those games even better.

I’m constantly realizing that I’ve forgotten critical details about games from back then, dude. I just haven’t replayed some of them in so long. Shit… I had already stopped following the Pokémon games before I even registered at GW originally.

Thought 1 was Viridian where the tutorial guy hangs out. Didn't know Saffron was yellow. Looks almost identical to that spot.
2 I didn't even notice but would've probably guessed Mt. Moon.
Got 3 right because it was pink.
Thought 4 was the museum.
5 I assumed was a champion fight or something because for some reason I thought Gary had a Dugtrio.
Got 6 in general.
Got 8 and 9.
Thought the other 8 was Mt. Moon. Don't remember Pokemon Tower entrance being a cave.
Got the other 9.
Didn't even try to guess 10.
Got 11.
Thought 12 was aboard the ship because weird interior and I remembered the part in the anime where an old guy trades with Ash so I figured there was a trader there in game.
Guessed 13 right because red and coastal.
Got 14 right.
Thought 15 was near Cerulean or something. Completely forgot Viridian Forest existed.
Got 16.
Had no idea for 17. Completely forgot about Celadon too.
Knew 18 was somewhere during the E4 challenge.
Thought 19 was Mewtwo.
Thought 20 was Pokemon Tower again.
Got 11.

So 11 right. Would've been much worse if I couldn't rely on color coding though.

Oof, you're right, that was my mistake! I didn't look at the level, so I assumed it was a rare Dugtrio from Diglett Tunnel. Now I'm guessing it's inside the Viridian Gym -- maybe Giovanni. If not, I guess it's probably Victory Road. Good catch!

This was one I got wrong. I thought it was the exit of Dark Cave, right above Lavender Town. I always remembered the entrance to Pokemon Tower as a normal building.

Saffron has those tracks that aren't in many other places in the game.

Nah man it's not embarrassing to have a good memory. Mine went to the shitter with years and years of weed smoking. I practically only played Pokémon games growing up, I didn't have interest in anything else until I got a PS2 in 2003. So, the last Pokemon game I really put work into was Ruby, which I have the most vivid memory of. Despite that, I put far more hours into Silver and Yellow as a kid, I guess the Gen 3 memories just overwrote the others.

I'm finding it slightly easier to remember certain things if I look at Silver and SoulSilver maps side by side, like this:

I know they fixed up the story a bit for SoulSilver, but man this game is so polished. It's a little weird playing this directly after just having a run through Alpha Sapphire, since there's like 2 QoL features I'm really missing in this game (Like exp share, I forgot about the fuckin grind in Gen 1/2). Overall, it's almost playing like a brand new game for me with distant memories. I'm really enjoying it. The music is hitting all the nostalgia buttons.

I missed out on so many Pokémon titles when I stopped playing handheld Nintendo games around like 2004 - 2005. The next game I would have played that was Pokémon related was Let's Go Pikachu, then Pokémon Sword, which was a HUGE jump from what I remembered. I see why so many people value HeartGold/ SoulSilver, though. It really is a great remaster.

I’m played by HG on emulator for the first time right now and it feels so much easier than the original R/B. Gym leaders are a joke, rival chooses not to fight most of the time, the areas surrounding the gyms provide you the Pokémon type needed to beat that particular gym leader. I just got my 8th badge with my entire main team in the 20s/30s

Even after you pointed those out it took me a while to figure out what you were referring to. Didn't notice that detail until now. I didn't know those were uncommon though, so I probably would've been wrong still.

I was mainly talking about these little barrier pole things being in the same spot. I assumed the building on the right was Viridian Gym or something.

I played Pokemon Pearl for a couple hundred hours. I played it more recently than the other games, but I don't know if I'd be able to recognize ANYTHING from that game, or even remember a single town's name. I guess some games just leave a more lasting impression, for some reason.

That's the gen I stopped playing Pokemon. What did you think about it? Do you recommend it?
The music is hitting all the nostalgia buttons.
There's an item you can get that switches all the music (and sound effects?) to the GB versions. I love when companies put care into their games.

Ah yeah, I can see that. Viridian Gym looks just like that building, and the coloring can throw you off a bit.

FWIW, I think those tracks are only seen in Bicycle Road, Vermilion City, Saffron, and the route east of Vermilion? I remember them standing out to me a lot because I could never quite figure out what they were

Thinking of playing the remaster eventually, since I never played this gen.

Honestly, this video does a great job explaining exactly how I feel. I enjoyed the newer games during my experience, but they are shallow in comparison to the gen 1-3 games & respective remasters, IMO. (I only say 1-3 because that's what I've played, but I believe it's gen 1-5 that are considered the "older gen", but you'd probably know that more accurately than me lol)
