Sony Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster

This release has been rumoured for a while, but it seems like it has been rated by the ESRB, so it's almost definitely happening.

I personally am nowhere near as down on remasters/remakes as most people, but this one just makes no sense to me. The game is easily available on PS4, and can be played on PS5 as well. Its release feels more like a commentary on the gaming industry as a whole, but this just seems like a miss to me.

Maybe it's for the people who are buying Lego Horizon and have never played the series before? I do think this game is superior to its sequel, so it's more just that it isn't necessary.

Any thoughts on this? Anyone planning to pick it up.

Any remasters of PS4 gen and beyond are marginal improvements at best IMO. I guess it's great for people who never experienced the original, but... you can already play the PS4 version on the PS5, so ????????

I dunno. The Last of Us: Remastered: Remade seemed pointless. This does too. I don't get it.

I agree with this. Remake OLD games that don't function well on new systems, so that people can continue to enjoy them. Don't remake something that arguably still looks great.

I was so confused when I read the title of this. I agree, it's still plenty gorgeous and it's already playable on the current gen. How pointless.

I'd rather they go fix some of the classic games from the PSP which don't even let you move the camera properly.

This is my feeling too. Remaster games that need it. This is not one that did. It still looks visually stunning. I’ll take a ac black flag remastered. Or ffx.

Honestly feel like both those games still look really good.

Maybe update character models on Black Flag a little

Oh they do. But they are still games I love worth remastering. Some of the controls on both were wonky too and could use a good tweaking.

I see no reason for this. HZD looked amazing on it's own.

Give us the remastered oldies we yearn for!

It STILL looks good to me, I was just playing it the other day on PS4 Pro.

My only guess is maybe they’re gearing up for another installment in the franchise, and a remaster is a cheap way to regain interest in the meantime? It has been a little while since the FW DLC came out, and I don’t recall seeing anything recent about the franchise…

I was not a huge fan of HZD. I liked the world and lore and story, but the gameplay I had did not overly click with. Also the actual open world felt kind of boring at times to explore

Hated the limited inventory wheel of 4 weapons only. I did read something on reddit about how to make combat better/some of the systems werent explained well

But that was me

Hot take: anything from PS3 era and beyond does not need a remaster

Depends, some games with some jank could use a remaster, but mostly agree with you.

You know what? I changed my mind. The additional details from PS3 to PS4 can really affect the look, feel, and atmosphere of a game world. I think PS3 era is the LAST gen that *might* need a remake/remaster. And even then, only some games.

I played the entire Dead Space series this year for the first time ever and they played just as good as any PS4 game. They looked almost as good as any PS4 game, too.

You’re not exactly wrong, especially when you start hitting a multitude of settlements. They all start looking the same. BUT, that’s one of those things where if you keep the lore in mind, it makes sense, because the world is pretty barren with the exception of “old world” sites and the settlements. I think they excelled when making the dungeons, though. So many games have dungeon crawling segments, and they really turned that concept into something unique to their franchise.

That’s exactly why as soon as I unlock the open world in any game like that, I go wild upgrading that kind of inventory stuff. Far Cry is one series that definitely goes overboard with making you work for your expanded inventory. As a player of that series, HZD doesn’t seem so bad.

Depends, some games with some jank could use a remaster, but mostly agree with you.

And there were certainly some janky parts early on, but either they’ve been patched out or I don’t notice them anymore. If anything, hopefully a remaster to optimize things could be helpful. That game is one that’ll make your console work.

Re: Remakes/remasters - anything on PS3 and before seems like fair game to me since they aren't backwards compatible with PS4/PS5. I know they could just be ported over, but at that point I'd rather have it looking modern.

The combat in the sequel is more complex, but I don't necessarily think it's better. Machines now have weaknesses to different types of arrows, which sounds like a good idea in theory, but in practice, you pretty much have to have everything in your inventory or some machines become arrow sponges. I think you can have more weapons, although I can't quite recall.

Agreed. Freshening up the graphics and optimizing the gameplay to take advantage of the newer hardware is about as far as I think it needs to go with that era, though.

You can, and weaknesses were a thing in HZD, but they put a heavier emphasis on it in FW.

I think aside from the graphical points people want remakes of these games because they don't run on PS4/PS5/PS6 and most people either don't own a PS3 or don't want to run old consoles because they're not maniacs like you and me.
That's an even better reason than the ones I gave tbh. I think most of the time, ports from that era suffice though. I've bought quite a lot of PS3-era ports for the Switch because the convenience of playing in handheld is so great. I think a lot of PS3 era games are available on PS4 and PS5 digitally, no? I genuinely don't know.

It depends. Early PS3-era stuff like Resistance: Fall of Man? Nope. GTAV? Heh.

It makes sense, but the rewards for exploring werent often worth it

Same. HZD wasnt awful but there were at least 5 if not more depending on elemental weapons Id like to have and going to the pause button and changing my load out wasnt fun. I get that for a super hardcore setting, but on default setting it more takes me out of the game because I DO have those weapons on me, but I have to pause and go change what is on my inventory wheel

Oblivion could use a remaster, though mods help a lot, I think about Alpha Protocol which a lot of the jank has been patched out, Lost Odyssey could use QOL improvements though some things like speed up and no encounters doesnt need to be a remaster

There is nothing unplayable that I can think of from that gen, but yeah just to make it better optimized and better QOL

Absolutely. The best “reward” you get in the game is so near the end that it’s not even really worth it. I found most of my interest in exploring revolving around the data you could collect solely because I was interested in how they presented the events leading up to the in-game present.

I agree, you were almost forced to carry a balanced inventory, almost as if the developers didn’t want you to specialize in one over the other like so many other RPG’s.

Nope, you get 13 different Skyrim remasters instead.

F.E.A.R was kinda rough, since it was originally a PC port. I’d love to see that franchise get another chance.

Lmao the next one looks to be Days Gone, WHICH IS NOT A BAD GAME, but does not need a remaster.

As cheesy as Deacon’s dialogue was, it is certainly up there on my favorite zombie games. The hordes and the dynamic around them impressed the hell outta me.
