Going back to watch the "best of" WWF/WWE

I mostly watched WWE in the early 2000s and stopped around the early 2010s. I always wanted to go back and watch the best "eras". I think I'm going to give the Attitude Era a try considering all the hype around it. Does anyone else have any other recommendations? Preferably what can be found on Peacock, which is surprisingly a lot.

I grew up with the Attitude era, it is by far my favorite, but it is also very much of its time and some of the jokes can be quite distasteful

I don't have Peacock, so I don't know what's on it, but you're spot on with the Attitude Era, it was peak WWF, and even just before the Attitude Era, the so called "New Generation Era" with Bret Hart, the rise of Stone Cold, D-Generation X, etc.

Yeah, it has not aged well, at all. You see a lot of Vince's...proclivities...and it is not at all good, but it was what it was in the moment, for better or worse.

The stuff on Peacock goes all the way back to the 70s. I started watching from the beginning and yeah, the jokes are awful. Vince McMahon casting in a bowtie is pretty strange as well.

edit: Even just in 1993 the jokes are really cringeworthy and unnecessary.

I’m 100% guilty of recently mauling my FB reels feed with 90’s wrestling content after watching two videos of Undertaker talking about the early years, one with talk of Paul Bearer playing pranks on him and another of people still believing him and Glenn Jacobs are brothers.

I’ve walked in a room with “new” wrestling on, and I dunno if it’s because I’m way older than I was back then, or what, but the new stuff just seems like garbage to me. Even the goofiest angles back then seemed Oscar-worthy compared to anything I’ve caught in passing in recent years.

Man, I was so crushed by those two this year. They were my favourites growing up...such a shame.

honestly Taker lost my respect when he said that wrestlers in the locker room were soft because they played video games all the time, and that the old days were better because people drank and did drugs backstage or whatever

It was really disheartening for someone who grew up loving them as kid. I didn't know they were secretly idiots. They hid it so well!

To be fair, we were oblivious to the politics of the world back then… and I don’t think many had the foresight to predict what things would be like today. Ask someone back then if we would have had gay marriage, a black president, a female VP, a first and second term with Trump, or recreational weed in half the states and they probably would have looked at you like you were crazy.

Yeah, I’ve got an issue with that… I regularly joke with my buddy about his boys and how we’re glad they’re hanging out yelling at a television at home instead of getting into the dumb shit we did at their age.

Yeah, fair. It's just really sad that they side with...that...though...ya' know.

Yeah, kids being addicted to games is better than kids being out there doing stupid shit for sure. At least you know where they are and what they're doing!

I agree, but, when it comes to public figures like that… I tend to look more at their actions than their loyalties, and from what I’ve seen, both do a considerable amount of good will towards a lot of people, whether it’s through charities or community engagement.

Absolutely. The way I see it… teenagers are gonna be teenagers, and part of that is being annoying. I’d rather be annoyed by a “fuck you, you fucking piece of fucking shit fuck” echoing from the basement than wondering whether or not they’re gonna get into some trouble or worse.

Grr...stop being logical and ruining my being mad at them! Nah, that's fair, they have otherwise been decent people.

So true, my sister's partner's son would be up until 3am screaming his head off at people, fuck you, fuck this, fuck that... kid's in the Air Force now working as a mechanic and doing a damn good job. Really happy for him.

Trust me, I have beef with me over this daily.

Exactly. Let the fuckers enjoy being kids while they can. The real world sucks, as I’m sure he’s aware now. Hopefully, like all of us, he’s able to still sneak off to his little corner of the world and indulge.

Yeah, he's still got his indulgences, just now he has responsibilities, too, but he's doing well and it's what he wanted, so he's happy about it all.

I always assumed that professional wrestlers were largely like their fans, heavily leaning conservative.

Taker lost my respect when he tried to seriously injure Kanyon with a chair to the head because Kanyon was gay.

Whoa… that’s news to me, too. Kinda strange considering wrestling involves a bunch of oiled up nearly-naked men playing grab ass to begin with, so you’d think homophobia wouldn’t be a thing.

Some of it I think is they knew it was over the top and didn't take themselves seriously

I don’t think coked up Randy Savage took anything seriously… I mean… those old promos, man. Between him, Ultimate Warrior, Rick Steiner, and some of the more goofier characters, pure comedy gold.

wrestling nowadays has gone away from from over the top characters and story lines and are more grounded for the most part.they are also more focused on wrestling than promos too now. I used to care more about promos than the actual wrestling. but that has changed in recent years especially since I started watching more Indie wrestling instead of the big Companies in WWE and AEW

I would also imagine that the “need” for promos isn’t quite what it used to be considering the performers tend to use social media to engage in that kind of stuff now. Back then, promos and commentary spots were the only way we really heard from them outside of the ring.

well aew and wwe still have those segments during the shows it’s not like they just have matches by going away from it i just mean people don’t few them as important as they used to. though that also depends on the person. but a lot of wrestlers aren’t known for their promos skills for example one wrestler Riccochet is more known for wrestling than talking. most indies don’t have promos and just do match after match though depending on the wrestler they will have a promo every now and then

That's one part I do appreciate about modern wrestling, even though I'm more in the mindset of having that healthy balance matches and promos to compliment the storytelling.

One important aspect I'd like to add to your statement of how much wrestling has evolved is that there's less of an emphasis on one's size & physique thanks to guys like Bret, Shawn, Waltman, among others helping pave the way for smaller talent looking to make a name for themselves.
