Maggie Smith, scene-stealing actor famed for Harry Potter and 'Downton Abbey,' dies at 89

Maggie Smith, who won an Oscar for 1969 film “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” and won new fans in the 21st century as the dowager Countess of Grantham in “Downton Abbey” and Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, has died at 89.

It had to happen sooner or later. I'm 42 and I remember watching Sister Act as a kid and she was already old then. Still, sucks to lose such a great and accomplished actress. Hope she's having a good time with Alan Rickman.

A simply legendary actress is every way. Much like Ian McKellen seems determined to do, she was acting right up to the end of her life. It's obviously very sad that she's died (my wife is genuinely very upset about it), but she lived a full life and left an incredible legacy. She had a life that will be celebrated by many people for a very long time.

For me it was her smaller roles. Like Richard Griffiths she had the larger than life roles in a certain film series, and Sister Act, but I adored watching her in The Lady in the Van, Ladies in Lavender and of course The Secret Garden! There'll never be another person like her!
