Earlier tonight I found out that the City of Heroes/Villains MMORPG, that I spent a good while playing back in the 2000s, was released as open-source code and that there are current active servers for it. Basically, you can now play it for entirely free.

I've been wondering what game I might be able to pull GWF members into playing together, and a fun MMORPG that's basically guaranteed to run on any current PC for free seems like a great candidate.

Elevator pitch; City of Heroes is a superhero-themed MMORPG where you create and customize your own hero—or villain—with unique powers, costumes, and backstory. Set in the sprawling, comic book-inspired Paragon City, you team up with others to battle evil, complete story-driven missions, and level up by fighting gangs, monsters, and sinister masterminds. The game focuses heavily on character customization, fast-paced combat, and cooperative gameplay, letting you live out your own superhero saga in an ever-evolving online world.

I spent a little while rolling through the tutorial and testing things out, and it seems pretty easy get things set up and playing.

Basically you just need to register at the server-host forums below;

Here is the getting started guide;

Basically once you have a forum account, it should prompt you to create a game account which is just agreeing to their TOS and so on. Then you can download the launcher and get playing.

I picked server Victory since the load was light, so I'd recommend anyone wanting to try pick that too. That way we can get a GWF league of superheroes going.

I thought about going through all the character creation options and explaining those, but there are literally so many different types of heroes you can build, so many different looks, etc. that it's more fun to just play around and see what you end up creating.

My first character was a super-reflexes Tanker with claws that I made look like a dinosaur. Of course.

(Graphics are of course super dated since it was released in 2004, but you can at least probably run them all on ultra at this point.)

So come play superheroes with me. And feel free to post your character creations, etc. in this thread.

Oh, and you get a rocket-pack with limited flight time as soon as you're out of the tutorial, so that's fun.

Oooooooh, I bet it'd be pretty tight on a SteamDeck. Good idea.

I've decided to lure people in by making heroes I think fit them, so first off;

Looked up when you get new powers, which is just every other level.

🛠️ Power Selection Levels

You gain the ability to choose a new power at the following levels:

  • Level 1 (Primary & Secondary power)
  • Level 2
  • Level 4
  • Level 6
  • Level 8
  • Level 10
  • Level 12
  • Level 14
  • Level 16
  • Level 18
  • Level 20
  • Level 22
  • Level 26
  • Level 32
  • Level 38

You don't get a new power every level; at some levels, instead, you get enhancement slots to improve your existing powers.

🧙‍♂️ Power Pools

  • At Level 4, you gain access to Power Pools (like Speed, Flight, Leaping, etc.).
  • You can select epic/patron powers at Level 35, but only one of those pools.

🔼 Summary

  • Powers come at level 1, then every even level up to 20.
  • After that, power choices are more spaced out: 22, 26, 32, and 38.
  • You get enhancement slots on the other levels.

At 4 I took super speed thinking flight wouldn't fit if I'm playing a T. Rex. It does let me jump super high after getting momentum, but you can still take fall damage so... That's awkward.

There's an actual super jump option which probably negates that, but I think I'd use that on more of a Hulk like character.

Should have made my dinosaur teleport like a Cretaceous Kurt Wagner.

So I need to get to level 10 before I'll be able to form a Supergroup (and need at least 4 others online in a party) at the registrar, but that should be doable fairly quickly.

In the meantime we can come up with names for it.

I've been giggling at "Goose War Force" , but anything else that acronyms to GWF would be cool.

I can't work out how the hell to search for player names to add to the friend list... But I'm probably a dumb boi today.

I made a GWF chat channel and assume if people start talking in that, it'll be easier to track each other down.
