It's that time again! Haven't gone out to physical stores in a couple of years (for a couple of different reasons!), and probably won't for many years to come, but I still end up spending entirely too much on dumb shit (that I never play) all the same.

That being said, so far we've dropped some cash at the Square-Enix store, Best Buy and GameStop. Some highlights including:

- GameStop has a massive 75% off (and 25% and 50%) selection, which seems to only work for people with their paid membership. Still, talking $5 for Tales of the Arise PS4, $15 for Soul Hackers 2 PS4, lots of other stuff. Their website is still ass and trying to figure out what's actually available is a pain - and double check absolutely everything when you get to checkout, because they're scummy as fuck and stealth edit New games to Used and other stuff like that.

- Square Enix store has a lot of stuff on sale, with a flat $10 shipping fee. Final Fantasy XVI for $40, Octopath Traveler for $40, Forspoken for $20, Star Ocean 6/DioField Chronicle for $20. Some decent deals, especially if you snag the PS4 versions and get the digital PS5 version for "free."

- BestBuy is just generally fairly good. Elden Ring PS4 is $40, non-2 Spider-Man games for $20, GoW Ragnarok for $35, Yakuza: Like a Dragon for $10.

Sigh...

So far nothing much. Probably wont be too much more stuff either. Hopefully.

1- New modem. I think the old one is... old and having us lose some internetz. It's some Arris docsis 3.1 one with a 2.5gig lan port.

2- New router. Old one is having some weird issue where it resets its internal clock into it's manufacturing/factory reset date of May 2018. Annoying as hell for parental controls and scheduled tasks in general. So I just got a newer fancier Asus one with a 2.5gig lan port in it too. I can also use the old one as a wireless mesh spot. It's all nice and good.

3- New air fryer. Ninja branded one. Comes with 2 separate 5qt baskets. Old one was starting to die out and... potentially become a fire hazard.

4- New 3rd monitor for the wife. She sacrificed one of hers for the child when his broke some months back. Now she's getting a new one. She's the power user in this house.

5- Desk for wife. Some L-shaped one from Amazon. Comes with some outlets on the top back of the desk for chargeringmajigs and also has some sweet RGB goodness.

6- Desk for child. His is old and kind of annoying. I had one similar to his. Those cabinet style ones that had double doors that you open up. In the times of single monitors and computers that could work while suffocating it was great and cool, but no so much today.

7- Three wall mounts for the wife's monitors. Some cheap, but functional slightly articulating ones for all of them. Hope I find the studs on the first go later...

I do want a new keyboard for meself, but may postpone that thanks to current finances. It'd be a nicer $100+ one to replace my current one I got from a yardsale for like $10 or $15. it's a nice Logitech G15 that was amazing at the time and still feels decent. Ish. It was an expensive keyboard at the time for sure. AND it has a small LCD on it. But yeah.

Also the wife kind of needs a newer better GPU. Maybe there's some good deals for those. Maybe this year is more for her for this time and Christmas time.

I bought a new PS5 controller cause my 2 year old one has some prerty bad stick drift - the life cycle on these is ridiculous. Went with Galactic Purple.

...I also bought butter.

This might be the first time Canada has ever won at a sale! Elden Ring PS4 is $35 at amazon!

I thought about picking it up for that price, but the PS5 version is still $55. Though I've heard that for some reason, it's better to buy the PS4 version, even if you're playing on a PS5? Not sure if they fixed whatever was causing that.

In any case, I haven't bought anything for Black Friday. Canada's sales are generally not very good. Sometimes there are ok video game deals, but with Christmas right around the corner, I usually have more games than I can play. I think I'll pick up a couple of digital DLCs that are currently on sale, but they are frequently at these prices anyways.

On release - the PS4 version was for some reason more stable when run on the PS5 than the PS5 version for some stupid reason that escapes me now. I believe it's been corrected - I also believe it's free to upgrade from the PS4 to PS5 version, even though your disc would be the PS4 version.

Good call. I was just doing some googling about Elden Ring and saw it has that free upgrade. I also learned that the platinum does not require multiple playthroughs (if you abuse cloud saves). I'll probably end up buying it because if there's little to no missable stuff, it will be much more enjoyable than some of my From Software experiences to date.

Yeah - it's a really easy platinum which can be done without a whole lot of extra stuff. There's the three endings which can be easily taken care of with saving scumming or just powering through NG+ (NG+ is SUPER easy).

There's a missable boss and missable weapon that impact trophies, but other than that nothing crazy.

It's a great game, even if it's not my favourite Fromsoft title.

Absolutely can't go wrong with butter. Slather that shit all over the place!

Oh shit, hell's about to freeze over here. lol

I'm not super sure it's a great price for a ~2 year old game, but I reckoned by that same measure that if it hasn't dropped by now it's not probably not going to before either being a used-only type of deal or having the gaudy "Hits" cover art that I can never stand.

This seems to be the case with absolutely every cross-gen PlayStation game I've picked up today, due to being a physical goods junkie. Like the PS4 disc version is a little cheaper (than the PS5 disc version), and gets a "free" upgrade to the PS5 digital version when put into a PS5 - so cheap and easy Trophy stacking, as is my fancy. Whereas if I were to buy the PS5 physical version, I... pay more and do not get a PS4 downgrade? What logic is this?? :chuckle

I believe it's been corrected - I also believe it's free to upgrade from the PS4 to PS5 version, even though your disc would be the PS4 version.
...Well I guess I have a trip to BestBuy in my near future after all. It doesn't have the free upgrade label on the cover art, so I splurged too much a bit and bought the XBO/XSX, PS4 and PS5 editions for imminent shenanigans. Woo for saving $40 though!

In Appalachia, butter and Crisco are your friends...
Near enough where I grew up, so I'm well aware! My grandmother was an ardent Butter Believer. 😅

only 4 Switch games on sale...
For Switch, it seems like people have had to get a little creative. QVC - yes, that QVC - has been running a pretty decent promotion for new account creators, so people have been getting things like Super Mario RPG for ~$40. And Target either is or was having a Buy 2 Get 1 sale, wherein you would purchase/order 3 copies of a game and immediately cancel 2 of them (or just let them be delivered and return 2) to get a prorated discount.

I did say it was to be a Souls-a-thon across all platforms! 👀

Chop-chop! This is not a drill. Kind of YMMV, but click on "1-hour pick up" and insert a zip code. It'll bring up a list of anything nearby. No dice with Super Mario RPG anywhere I've tried, but Super Mario Wonder and Tears of the Kingdom are readily available in this neck of the woods at least:

Super Mario RPG $40

Super Mario Bros Wonder $40

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom $40

To be Canadian is to suffer, clearly. 😓

$40 for TotK is nuts, though. BotW itself rarely drops under $40! And Staples, of all places? Gotta be liquidating stock or some shit, doesn't compute.

If you can wait for them to get it into stock, Shopper's is usually the best place to get Switch games because there is a 20% off deal every Thursday for Seniors (which is not a super high age for them). I get my mom to buy games on my behalf once in a while there so I can get the discount.
I didn't even think of the Seniors Day, that's a great point.

I got Wonder with the Family & Friends on Tuesday (it was their last copy) and my sister bought her kids the switch and an extra controller.

This is good advice though. The 20x the point events work nice in conjunction too.

Okay, so.... The hole keeps on getting deeper...

3, again- Returned the air fryer we got and bought a different one. We often used the old one for personal pizzas and two small baskets can't do a small pizza good. And we aren't going to start cutting them in half. So this one is an Instantpot brand 10 quart one that looks more like a convection oven but is an air fryer.

8- I got me a keyboard. Logitech G915. Looks neat. Seems fancy. I decided to spoil myself. Maybe one day I'll evolve into those fancy build it yourself ones.

9- One of the kid needed a headset. So he's getting it.

10- Also an RGB stand for them.

11- Got a bed frame for me and the wifey. Seemed appropriate finally as we only have a box spring with our mattress on it.

12 & 13- Some neat fiddly thingamajigs for both the kids. A light ball you can change the colors of. It has a holder or you can just grab it and... bring it with you I guess. Sure.

14, 15, 16- Other neat early Christmas presents.

17- Oh, as an impulse purchase, while I was grabbing the keyboard off Newegg, there's a "group buy" thing there now, so I got two 20W usb C wall warts for 99c each. I can toss couple old crappier ones now.

I just bought a bunch of games at two local retro game stores. One store was selling games at 10% off. The other had a buy 2 get one free, plus 10% off New titles and other stuff.

I was going to go to Target to get some stuff to clean my consoles and controllers (toothbrushes, Magic erases, etc), but I remembered what day it was and did not want to deal with those crowds.

Nice grab for sure! My knees complain just thinking about going back to not having a frame. Just one of those things where they can cost a pretty penny, but also last a really long time.

Whereabouts, if I may ask?
Northwestern fringe; predominately in and around Youngstown, Ohio. Lots of cross pollination with WV and PA for family and friends.

Staples has weird deals on every now and then. I got Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon for the DS for like $10 a couple years after it released.

No deals on games in Saudi either. No Black Friday shopping for me... I think they call it White Thursday or something here too, idr

Ahh, that's Jim Traficant's old stomping grounds...
Yessir! Lots of folk, my mother included, still speak fondly of him for taking care of their problems - nevermind that whole fraud and bribery thing. :chuckle

Given what it's supposed to be, that probably makes sense.

But everyone loves deals so they should totally get on board. And this year's deals needed to suck less to help take the edge off all this greedflation gouging!

I lived in Kinsman for about 4 years in the mid-90s. My dad worked at the Fire Department in the Youngstown Air Reserve base for around 15 years.
Oof, I'm so sorry. :rofl

The YW Regional was about a 10 minute drive from my grandmother's, so quite familiar with the area. Small world, eh?

I don't mind the Youngstown area. I wish Youngstown, Niles, and Warren were in better shape, but I've seen some really bad areas throughout the country, and the Youngstown metro isn't one of them. Also, the Yankee Kitchen in Vienna is a personal favorite.

We didn't get anything video game related but we did get a new set of knives for our kitchen.

...and a new marble rolling pin after I may or may not have let our old one roll right off the counter.

This thing is made of like mostly 2x1 inch square stock and was only $86 off amazon. Considering free shipping also, it's a hecking banger for what you're getting if it is as sturdy as it looks. 14in tall with 12in of space under. And just today we went to buy some totes and grabbed some shorter ones to shove under there. So... totes. That's #18.

19- I did grab Everhood on Steam. So far liking it. I have watched a playthrough of it, but at this point I had forgotten most of it so it's nice.

My bank account hit $3.57. 😂

Target apparently had the PS5 for $350, one day only, and was only announced like half a day in advance. On the one hand that's an amazing price and I kind of wish I tried for it. But, on the other hand, I didn't have to wake up at 3AM and compete with scalpers. So I suppose it's fine!

Depends on where you're looking, but yeah - definitely worse places out there. The issue with the Youngstown area is of course that it's been neglected and abandoned for decades. When I left escaped a decade or so ago, we were still in the throes of the Opioid epidemic. One of my step-father's nieces and one of my sister's best friends since childhood have both died from overdoses in the last year, so, things from a (mostly) outward perspective are seemingly still on that downwards track.

The Lordstown plant and general trucking woes obviously aren't helping matters either, since those were two of the better options for jobs/careers at least when I was young. Speaking of which, dropped by the old stomping grounds over near Eastwood Mall maybe two years back and "depressing" was the word of the day. I mean it looks nice enough I suppose, but... :shrug

Never did get around to trying out Yankee Kitchen. I've always heard good things, though.

VStock has a 40% all pre-owned items sale online for Cyber Monday. They sell movies, game, anime, Manga, books, CDs, records, comic books, and merch.

If I can get 40% off on a rare-ish game, I'm doing it.

Yankee Kitchen is nostalgia. There's also a place in Kinsman that is known for its pies called Time's Square. That place introduced me to the greatness of Lemon Meringue pie. I tried getting a slice a few years ago, but it seems they only make certain pies for slices and Lemon Meringue would require ordering a full pie in advance.

My condolences. I lived in Erie, PA for about 3 years. One of my buddies was from Youngstown
Aye, well within the gravitational pull of Ohio. Was out that way a couple of times over the years a lifetime ago. Handful of visits for various Taekwondo gatherings/tournaments, couple visits to Shriners Children's Hospital after my spinal injury. Always seemed like a decent place. Certainly a vast improvement over Youngstown. 😂
