I have even pulled out the piano app on my phone and tried to ear-ball the notes, in hopes I could search that against some MIDI database or something, but that ain't worked either.

I probably know even less about music theory than I do video game music, but this is what I hear for that one instrument at least;

It feels more like town music than battle music to me, but I agree on the RPG part. Not that I'd know.

I did start off wondering if it was Cosmo Canyon or Old Mining Town from Final Fantasy 7, but nah. But even then I guess I was hearing a Western theme to it.

Really need Rachel to help before I start emailing Nobuo Uematsu asking "DID YOU DO THIS?!"

Cosmo Canyon was one of the first things that came to mind and then I went and listened to it only to realize my recollection of that was awful.

I've been going down rabbit holes of games like Grandia, Tales of, and even Star Ocean. Only to realize how chaotic so many battle themes actually are.

"The Loop" — A Short Story of Ben and TD

In the dim-lit halls of a remote asylum, two rooms echoed with the same haunting melody. A tune pulsing like a heartbeat, looping endlessly in the minds of Ben and TD. No one else could hear it. But to them, it was everything.

Ben, a forum administrator with a knack for identifying obscure soundtracks, and TD, a poster known for his encyclopedic gaming memory, had stumbled upon the song during a online forum competition. Two people allured by the rhythm of the beat. No title. No tags. Just the loop.

They became obsessed.

They tore through forums, interrogated composers, even broke into a defunct arcade in Shibuya rumored to house prototypes. But the song eluded them. It wasn't from Chrono Trigger. Not Silent Hill. Not Fez. Not Katamari Damacy. Every lead was a dead end. Every denial only deepened the mystery.

Weeks turned into months. They stopped sleeping. TD built a wall-sized timeline of game releases from 1983 to 2023, cross-referencing sound chips and regional exclusives. Ben coded an AI to match waveform signatures across 10,000 games. It crashed. Twice.

Then came the incident.

They stormed into a gaming convention, screaming that the answer was hidden in a cancelled Dreamcast title only playable on a dev kit buried beneath Sega HQ. Security was called. They resisted. Hard.

Now, locked away, they sat side by side, humming the loop in perfect sync. Staff tried replacing it with Animal Crossing music. It only made them cry.

But here's the twist: one night, a janitor passing through the ward paused. "Hey," he said, "that tune sounds like something from Echochrome II... or maybe Rez?"

Ben and TD froze. Their eyes widened. TD whispered, "No... it can't be..."

And just like that, the loop began again.

Ditto. Kirby is another of those Nintendo titles I never really got the chance to play. If it's not the Gourmet Race or whatever was remixed with Snoop's "Drop it like it's hot", I don't know it.

TBF, I know it more from Smash Bros. It's one of my more favorite themes used in the game. I've never heard it in a Kirby game as I've never bothered to beat any, even if they're super easy.
